Lily vs. Lilly vs. Lili (as a nickname)

Hi everyone. We just found out we will be having our first child (a girl) and have just started talking about names. We really like the name Lily, but the spelling has been a bit of a problem for us. We prefer how the spelling Lilly looks to Lily, but I hate when people try to be unique and change the original spelling. Then again, I also like the spelling Lili, simply because of the way I am more inclined to pronounce it (with a slight pause and softer "l" sound) which I find a more attractive pronunciation. However, if we use Lili, it will have to be as a nickname. We like Cecilia, but we also like the nickname Cecily. And Cecily and Lil/i/y/ly are too close to have two daughters with those names. Suggestions regarding which you like best, full name suggestions, and middle name suggestions are all greatly appresciated. Thanks in advance!

Lili as a nn for Lilith, Lilibelle or Lillian...Liliana is ok but not my favorite. Cecily and Lili ARE too close, I think, and I love Cecilia most except up against Lilith and then it might be a tie.
If you use just Lily I really prefer the original spelling. Lilly is a surname and therefore not as pretty to me. Also, you’ll forever be saying to everyone, "That’s Lilly with 3 L’s. L-I-L-L-Y."
My married last name is common but spelled slightly differently and it is a PAIN.
Hope this helps!

I think if you want people to call your child Lili, you should name it Lili, Not give it one name and expect it to be called another... They are all lovely, I love the name Lilly. Good Luck :)

"Lilly" will have to correct people on her name all the time! I adore the name Cecilia (nn Cecily). Maybe you should consider a longer name like Liliana or Lilian and have "Lily/Lilly/Lili" be the nickname??? I personally prefer Liliana and Cecilia (nn’s Lili and Celia/CeCe)!

Hmmm.. I’m not sure I made this clear in the original post, but if we use Cecilia, we are stuck between the nicknames Cecily and Lili. On another note, thanks for all the suggestions. We’re not huge fans of Lilian, Lilith, or Lilibeth, but Liliana is okay. Thanks everyone! -Poll Creator

I’m not sure Lili can work as a nn for Cecilia. Lia could but Lili is a big stretch.
I definitely don’t agree with "name her what you’ll call her"...if you can have a name that you love with a nickname you love that she can choose one of when she is older than so much the better. And it helps to look more professional, etc.

Are you wanting a mega common name? All the bliion names that nn to Lily/Lillie/Lilli/Lilly are so overdone. Avoid this name and nn Lily if you don’t want to have the Jennifer/Lisa/Ashley/Jessica of the 2000’s. Check SSA website to see how many names are in Lily name family in top 1000. If you nn her some version of Lily then it doesn’t matter how unique her ’real’ name is she won’t ever use it.

We are naming our baby girl to be Lilianna, with the nickname Lily so that she will still be able to find things with her name on it on occasion. (books, etc.) My husband and I went back and forth on using Lily or Lili, but I’m sticking with Lily for that reason.
