Nickname for vs. Fiona
I want to name my daughter Fiona. I really love nicknames, and, of course, there’s no nickname for Fiona other than FiFi, which is a dog’s name. So I came up with this idea - tell me if I’m reaching.
Fiona is short for Finnula. So, what do you think of the nickname Finn? Cute or stupid? Thanks a million!

I think it’s a great idea to call her Finnula and call her Fiona- but personally, I would spell it Fionnuala. She can always go by Fiona, and it’s no stretch at all from Finnula/Fionnuala.

Hmm.. I think it seems like a bit of a leap to call Fiona ’Finn’. I love both names, actually, but they strike me in very different ways.. I would envision a Fiona and a Finn having completely different personalities, so IMO those names just don’t seem right for the same person. If that makes sense? Does Fiona really need a nickname? Or I’m sure you could always come up with a nickname unrelated to her name. The nickname I had from my family growing up had nothing at all to do with my name.

Finn is really cute, esp. with the full name Fiona. Also, consider calling her "Fi". I have a cousin named Fiona and we alternate between Fiona and Fi...and both are adorable!

Fiona is the feminine form of Fionn. It was coined by a Scottish writer/poet. Fionnula/Fionnoula is not a variant or beginning of Fiona.
Nicknames are unnecessary for the name. If she is called one, it’ll probably be "Fi" for short when you’re calling her through the house.

Nuala is a common nickname for Fionnula! I think it's really cute and you can always change nicknames later in life. If she grows up a bit and decides she likes "Finn" or something else it's up to her, and I think you've given her some great options!

Effie is also cute. And another classic name. Thinking about naming our baby girl Fiona. Liking Effie or Fi for nickname.

Well, I can't disagree with the Fifi idea. The thing is--when you give her the nickname, make sure she's ok with it. Because, honestly, at first it was kind of offensive for me when people started calling me that. But otherwise-it's awesome!

My name is Fiona and my mom calls me Fi. I know a Fionnuala and Fiona's a cute nickname for it, along with Nuala or Fionnua. I think the only drawback for Fionnuala is the pronunciation and spelling might be hard for people but I like Fionnuala more than Fionula honestly. I love the name Fionnuala (or Fionula, Fionnula) and think it's really pretty. You could go with Fiona and call her Finn, even though it's primarily a boy name it's still cute and sophisticated sounding. You could always go another route and use the nickname Fia for Fiona. Whatever you do, they're all cute and beautiful and very Gaelic and The Gaelic origin has many pretty names.
