Olivia too common vs. Yes vs. No

We love the idea of naming our child after their grandpa Oliver. Now that Olivia is currently the number one name in the country, we are hesitant about using it. We'd hate for her to be Olivia last name throughout her school career. How many Olivias do you personally know?

Olive might work out better, it's slightly less common

To answer your question about personally, I've never met any. Not my age or baby. But I haven't met too many babies, 4 at most.
My opinion is I think you should go for it anyway. It has ties to her grandpa and she might love that. Honestly there's always a chance a kid might not like their name. I've met people with unique names my age and they disliked it for multiple reasons. No keychains, people mispronouncing and misspelling it. Just a thought. I think you should pick something you like. Olivia's popular cause it's a solid choice.

I haven't met a single Olivia. I think maybe I went to high school with one, but that was nearly 10 years ago though.

I think its a pretty name. I definitely think you should use it

I personally know 3 Olivia's (one is Olyvia), 2 are babies one is around my age. I honestly can't stand the name anymore though out of general popularity. It's just annoying seeing the same name used over and over again with no originality. Your reasoning of naming her after a relative is definitely different, though I do prefer Olive as the first guest.

I know 3 Olivia's and 1 Alivia pronounced basically the same way. Olive is a good alternative or lilibet which is in the same ballpark.

Use what you want honestly. I don't know any for what it's worth. It's a fine name. What matters at the end of the day is giving your daughter an established name. You could pick any name and there will still be people to judge you. "Too weird" if you picked something rarer. "Too boring" if you picked something common. It's just best to pick what makes your heart happy to hear and say. This is a name you'll be repeating probably a thousand times a day lol

I know two Olivia's. But while it is very popular, personally if I loved a name and/or it had personal significance, I would use it no matter how popular it is.

I don't know any Olivia

Personally I only know 1 Olivia. But I know of 2 others, as in I've met them maybe once or twice and they are friends of friends children, but I don't really know them.

Popularity isn't quite what it used to be though. For example Mary, which was the #1 and sometimes #2 name for girls from 1880 to 1965, was given to way more girls than Olivia is now. So many girls in the 1920's were given the name Mary, that it is close to the equivalent of the top 5 names combined in the 2010's. The top 10 names of the 1950's is closer to the equivalent of the top 50 in the 2010's. Another example is Jennifer, the number of girls named Jennifer is about the same amount as the top 3 girl names combined in the 2010's.

Sorry for the long comment.

I don't know anyone named Olivia. But I have heard my friends who have children talk about a few Olivia's that their children know. I think it depends on your area, as far as popularity goes. Like growing up in the small town I grew up in, I knew only one Madison and one Emily, which were the most popular names for girls in my age group statistically. But I knew five girls named Sarah/Sara and four girls named Mackenzie/Mckenzie, which were both a lot less popular statistically than Emily or Madison for my age group. To get a better idea of how popular it is where you live, maybe you could ask people you know who have kids how many Olivia's they know from their children's daycare, preschool or elementary school.

I know about six Olivia's personally.

What about Lavinia? Similar and still honors Oliver, but a lot less common and so pretty!

My kids don't have one Olivia in any of their classes

I think using Olivia is perfectly fine if you love it and especially since it honors her grandfather. But if it is more important to you that she is the only one with her name in her classes at school, you may not want to use Olivia. There has only ever been one Olivia in my daughter's class at school (that may change though as she gets older) and I know two Olivia's in my daughter's dance classes. But the two at the dance studio we go to don't have to go by their first and last name, one goes by Liv and the other uses Olivia without a nickname.

I think Olivia is fine. However it may be too common for you, if you don't want anyone to have the same name as her, in her classes at school. But I actually don't know anyone named.

Some other ideas:

Olive

Oliva

Olivine (the name of a gemstone, pronounced ahl-iv-een, like olive-een)

Olivette

Livia (separate name than Olivia, from ancient Rome, the feminine form of Livius)

Liviana

Livna

Vivian

Vivienne

Viveca

Ziva

Aveline

Evelina

Aviva

Like any?

Where I live in the US has always been very diverse and unique with names, and my kid's class is no different. She has no Olivia's and only one girl with a top 10 girl name but multiples of other trendy or "unique" name. Use what you want

I love the name and for you it has a special connection to her grandpa. I would use it!

I would use the name Olivia. It's a beautiful name.

While Olivia is beautiful, it is really popular almost like Jennifer in its heyday. Growing up, we had 4 Jennifers in my class. Anyway, someone suggested Lavinia. That's real pretty too.
Livia is also nice, and Lola too. You have some nice choices.
