Okay so were still stuck on spelling. This name is said Lor-ee. On babynamesworld it says Laurie can be said Lor-ee or Law-ree. I think she’ll be fine either way, she can always correct people and really I don’t think it will be misprononced often.

Use whatever spelling you prefer.

I’d personally go with Laura and use Laurie as the nn, but I know Loris, Lauries, and Lories who all pronounce it as you’re intending.

The law-ree is a very subtle difference. People on the east coast will probably say it that way no matter which spelling you use.

People on the west coast probably can’t even hear the difference between the two.

Bottom line: Just pick the spelling you like.

I like Laurie or Lorie. I wouldn’t use Laura as a "full name" if you are always going to call her Laurie...she will always be correcting people then or saying "Call me Laurie."

I would pronounce Laurie "Law-ree" and Lori & Lorie "Lor-ee."

I LOVE the name Laurie! My sister is Laura and was called Laurie until she started using Laura in HS. I named my daughter Lauren and wanted to call her Laurie but it got too confusing with Laura/Laurie so she stayed Lauren. I still love the name though.

I have never heard Laurie pronounced LAW ree. I guess it’s just what part of the country that you are from. I think Laurie is precious and I love this spelling.

i prefer Lori. but i’d say them all the same, and all of the pronunciations sound the same to me

My name is Laurie, and I battled for years over the pronunciation. Born in Atlanta, but with a mother from Seattle, my dad and grandmother (both Southerners) called me LA-rie (LA like "fa, la, la" not like "law"). When people called me LOR-rie, I hated it. Then, when I was in my 20s, I realized that my mom, who named me, called me LOR-rie! She told me that if she knew people were going to pronounce it LA-rie, she would have spelled it "Lori" instead.

But the person who said that people on the west coast probably can’t even hear the difference is right. I get into hilariously funny conversations, trying to get them to say LA-rie.

Oh, yeah... Rhymes with "sorry" for about 90% of the U.S. population. (Ignore the 10% who say SORE-rie.)

My name is Laurie. My grandmother’s name was Laura. I’ve never heard my name pronounced Law-ree rather more like the LA-rie mentioned above or any variation from Laura to Lori, but I respond to them all. To me, it’s not an issue if my name is mispronounced and, in the area where I’ve grown up, I’m the only Laurie I know! I think it’s neat having a name that’s a little unusual.

My sister is named Laurie and we’re always correcting people. We pronounce it Law-ree. When you think about it,Laura is pronounced Law-ra and Lori is pronounced Lor-ree so the same goes for Laurie and Lori. However that’s because my mom is a reading specialist and taught phonics and worked with children with speech problems so phonetically speaking that’s the correct pronunciation. But like someone said its a personal decision and no matter what you’ll end up correcting people on how you want it said and it is your decision so spell and pronounce it however YOU want! Also I just realized how old this post is however maybe it’ll help someone else out.

My name is Laurie and I grew up in the Midwest. Everyone always pronounced it LO-rie, but when I moved to the East Coast, everyone called me Law-rie. I couldn’t hear the difference at first, but after living here for many years, I can. I have tried correcting people before, only to be told that I AM WRONG ! That if I wanted it to be pronounced that way, it should be spelled Lori. I have to say, it’s a weird experience being told that you say your own name wrong...Also, I am constantly asked what my name is short for. It happens probably a couple times a month and I actually find it kind of infuriating. Laurie is a full name, guys! Oh, and as for what’s been written on my Starbucks cups, I’ve gotten Laura, Lauren, Tory, Dory, Cory, and, personal favorite, Glory.

My name is Laurie and was and is still pronounced Law-ree, I guess partly because of the German in our family. Germans actually pronounce it Loaw-ree. The word for Mrs. in German is Frau pronounced Frow with the o being short o. So naturally since the au in Frau and the au in Laurie are pronounced the same Laow-ree

I love that German way. My mom had a Bavarian nanny I loved who said it "right" , and I had an Austrian friend who said it that way too. I’ve love how spanish speaking people say it "L’ owe ra" very musical, not so hard. I go by Laurie or Laura. Noticed "Laaaah reeee" once in MA and Lor ee" Soft and airy "r " please. Started Laura out of college.
I don’t like the hard "r". What to do?? It csn sound musical or awful! Laurie by strangers can feel too familiar-or fine and happy. It’s all in how they say it!

My name I go by is Lorrie , my mom made up the spelling out of taking my birth name " Lorraine " & taking out 2 letters . When I was traveling in Europe & the middle East , they did NOT like my nick name , since that part of the world associates it with the word for TRUCK/TRUCKS = Spelled " Lorry = Truck , or Lorries = Truckssssss , LOL, So I guess if one puts a " s " at the end of my nick name I am many TROCKS , LOL! ... BUT , when I was complaining how unfemine my name is in this part of the world , a man said something , funny /clever , he said, " well it’s okay you are moVing up in the world , there is a CRANE , called "Lorain " , LOL, !!!! _ _ _ "TOMATO" , " TOMATA" , Whatever , huh , lol ( wink ) ~

I’m a Lori and my very southern parents call me "lawreh." It’s ridiculous. I have a best friend named Laurie and her northern parents call her "Lori." SIGH. But anyway, I like my name. It’s sweet and sorta young sounding. You don’t think of a 50-something woman named Lori although that’s the way it is judging from the spike of popularity of the name during the late ’50s. My class had tons of Sarah’s, Sara’s and Lisa’s, too. Oh, and Suzanne’s.

Lori... my name is Lori. Pronounced lor-ree. when I was young I hated it but as I get older it's definitely growing on me. it's not a super common name like Ashley... and that's one thing I like about it. also like someone else said it's kind of a young sounding name. You don't think of an old woman when you hear the name Lori. the funny part is that my dad when asked why they spelled my name Lori he said that he thought it would be easier for me to learn how to spell it. Mr. Practical. and having grown up with a more unique name I decided to give my daughter one too. Her name is Lilyana... Pronounced Lil-e-on-a. Beautiful and unique.

My name is Laurie and it is almost always mispronounced as Lori. This is NOT the same name! My name is pronounced La Ree or Law Ree as the pronunciations online indicate not Lor Ee.

My name is Laurie, I'm from northern Michigan I'm in my 30s and named after my aunt, Today at work I waited on another Laurie who told me the correct pronunciation, I always wondered especially after reading Little Women, as well as watching it on screen n stage, tho a male the name was pronounced Law-ree, I've never cared for Lor-ee when young sounded to me like a sound not a name and I didn't identify with it, I'm sure I would have eventually but with such a close nit family it got hard being called big Laurie and little Laurie "more for my aunt since I was maybe 6-8yrs old when my family decided to call me LB or Laurie Beth since my middle name is Elizabeth, I was painfully shy for many many many years so never asked people I met to call me Laurie Beth n those who became close for a period of years caught on n began calling me that n some just called me Beth, I also look exactly like my older sister Erin so I was also called Erin's sister more than one ever should. something inside today just lifted and made me feel connected with my name for the first time, I like the way Laa -ree or Law-re sounds and one should connect with their name. Coming on here and reading all the posts and different opinions and heritage behind everyone's pronunciation of their same name has been therapeutic, thank u

I'm a Laurie, but there were many more Lori's in my home town when I was growing up (the 60s and early 70s). Most people pronounce my name as Lori, but I don't mind--they both sound pretty to me. If someone asks, my name sounds like "star," not "store." And Starr is my middle name, so that makes it easy enough. Whenever I meet another Laurie, she is almost always about the same age as me. I like my name very much because it is relatively unusual and has a classy, vintage ring to it, and I am becoming more vintage everyday. Also, it looks very pretty written in script.

I am a Laurie. I hate when my name is pronounced Law-rie. I would not answer a teacher when he did roll call. I have always said it as Loree.

My given name is Laurie and I'm sorry to say I have spent most of my 37 years correcting people (including members of my extended family!) on the pronunciation. The pronunciation of my variant is Law-ree and I am constantly being called Lorry and/or being TOLD by others I'm saying my own name incorrectly! Whilst I'm proud to have a unique name, the constant daily correction has become tiresome and I have now settled on people calling me Loz, which is a huge shame as I like my name very much.

Lori and Laurie are not one and the same name unless the individual pronouncing the name Laurie is northern.... in that case northern dialect apparently kicks in...which prevents northerners from correctly saying the name Laurie; therefore,
they need to stick to the spelling Lori and leave those of us who pronounce the "aur" as "awr" not "or" alone!

My name is Laurie and am constantly called Laura. I don't like the name Laura at all! I correct people but it makes no difference. If they get my name right they pronounce it Lowri instead of Law-ree. People it isn't that hard, when I tell you my name is Laurie, pronounce it that way. Very simple.

I am a Lori. I grew up in Brooklyn, NY where people didn't exactly speak the Queen's English. (They butchered the English language lol.) Every Lori or Laurie was pronounced the same, Lor-ree. It is not short for anything, it stands on its own. The more popular name was Laura, but we had a long Italian last name and my mother wanted to use the shortest version. (She obviously had no hope of me getting married and taking my husband's name haha.) I don't hate the name, but it isn't a unique name where I grew up. I've known a ton of Loris/Lauries over the years.

I named my second daughter Laurie. She is 8 months old. Even before she was born people and family pronounced Laurie as Lori. It drove me nuts and my husband I tried to come up with another name for her but I couldn't come up with one that I loved more than Laurie. My first daughter's name is Lillian which isn't extremely common and I wanted a a fairly uncommon name for my second child. My name is Heidi and I have always loved that my name isn't very common. I never knew another Heidi growing up and still don't other than the celebrity. People argue with me about the pronunciation of Laurie. It's worse than the number of people that wanted to call my first daughter Lilly. Her name is Lillian and we prefer everyone to call her by her given name. Same with Laurie. It's not Lori. If I had wanted to call her Lori I would have named her Lori vs Laurie.

Also, I have very sweetly asked neighbors and friends to simply call her LaLa if they cannot say "Lah-ree." A few do call her LaLa (which we call her almost 50% of the time at home) but the others just call her Lori and it drives me nuts.
posted by Heidi Bolden :: 3 years ago | report
Please don't let it drive you nuts. I have always pronounced them the same. Honestly I cannot hear the difference. I never even was aware anybody considered them different pronounciations until recently. To me it the same as Susie and Suzy.

My name is Laurie and I am from Canada. I was born in 1961 and I was told the spelling of my name was the male version. My mother had her first child in 1946 named him Larry but wanted to spell it Laurie. Her husband would not allow that for many reasons. So when I came along several years later and husband #2 she spelt it Laurie but pronounced Lori.
