Sienna is a town in Italy
Sierra is a range of mountains

they are very similar in sound and the popularity now is practically identical in the top 170s--so, do you have a preference on meaning?

what is the last name? pick the one that sounds best with last name.

Well, we are Italian and we heard that Cienna was the Italian Sienna so we would like the Italian name of S/Cienna if we go with that and not Sierra, WDYT??

Our last name is Fedrizzi. Joe and I think that they both sound fine so wdyt??

I like Sienna Fedrizzi better.

The N sound is not found in the last name, so there is greater variety in sounds when you say it with the last name.

Sienna is an Italian town and Fedrizzi is an Italian name so it goes with the Italian theme and heritage more than Sierra which means "a mountain range with jagged peaks."

Sierra has nature-y or wild west theme connotations.

i hope that helps

We have deicded on Cienna or Sienna. Which one? Please hurry! Which spelling makes you think Italian?

Sienna- Cienna doesn’t make me think Italian, it just looks misspelled, imo.

Sienna is the actual name of the city of Sienna in Italy while Cienna is a creative (trashy looking) spelling of Sienna.

Technically the spelling of Siena is Siena, Italy.

However Sienna is the most common name form. Either of those is better than Cienna

Siena is at 647 now.

Personally, I don’t think any of them go with Max and Lila. Max and Lila are so classic, so I think you need another classic name to flow with them. Sorry to throw a wrench into things! But that’s just my opinion. What about something like:
Ava
Bella
Cara
Ella
Emma
Hannah
Maya
Molly
Rachel
Sophie
Sara
Tessa

Behindthename.com says:
"From the English word meaning "orange-red". It is ultimately from the name of the city of Siena in Italy, because of the colour of the clay there."

Cienna is not listed at all.
posted by guest :: 15 years ago | report
if it helps, Cienna is not listed anywhere as an alternative spelling of Sienna. Only Siena and Sienna.

Sienna does sound the best with your last name (by the way Sierra is Spanish whereas Sienna has Italian roots), but I do agree that it does not go that well with Max and Lila.
However, if you really like it, I don’t think that matters a great deal.

I still like Sierra more. Sienna is weird sounding to me. I like the Italian name Gianna more.
Max and Gianna sounds better than Max and Sienna.

Max is latin from Maximilian meaning greatest.

Lila is arabic meaning Lilac.

I don’t see any theme there except they are currently popular names everyone can spell so they only have to choose another currently popular name everyone can spell to "flow" well.

Of the choices then Sienna is the clear winner since it is the most common and everyone can spell it.

Cienna is my daughter\’s name and I love it and never have had problems with mispronunciations. I found it in a baby naming book (I find books a little more credible sources of meanings and origins than online sources) it\’s the Italian version of Jane meaning graceful. My maiden name was derived from a little town in Italy known for lace making and I wanted something Italian to pass down to my daughter. Just because this spelling is not on any of those internet naming sites doesn\’t mean it\’s \"trashy or made up\" there are plenty of names that are popular in other areas of the world that later become popular here in the states. I believe in a few years this spelling will be a common alternative as the popular variations of Sierra/Cierra/Ciara.

My name is Cienna, and I do not find it a trashy version of the name sienna, just becaus it\’s not found on any of the other books/sites does not make it trashy or misspelled, and being common doesn\’t make it a winner, it makes it ordinary, and no offence to the kids with the S, it makes it boring.

even though you probably named your baby girl Sienna, I would just like to say my name is Cienna and it’s still italian just a different and unique way to spell it. It is not trashy, I don’t come from a trashy family or area and if you ask me the name with a C Is more attractive in my opinion. It makes me stand out where as when I was in grade school you would have your ten Matthews and ten Jessica’s or Emma’s. Although one year I think year 5 there was I that cienna but with an S. Anyways my point being it isn’t as you say "trashy" it is rather beautiful and I have grown to love my name and my mothers originality.

I gave birth to a beautiful baby girl two weeks ago, needless to say her name is Cienna wich spelled that way means God is gracious in italian..while sienna means a reddish brown of a make of car!!

I named my daughter Cienna in 1997 and I DO have regrets not going with Sienna spelling. As an former art student, the burnt sienna pastel was my go-to color for drawing and always said I would name my daughter Sienna. I chose the Cienna version because it was the year the Toyota Sienna minivan came out and I just couldn’t do it. She is now 17 and gets compliments all the time on the spelling of her name (due to wearing a name tag at work). I have given her my blessing to change the spelling if she wishes and she absolutely refuses.
Though I love the name... I still wish I had gone with Sienna or Siena. I hope this helps.

Hello, i understand this post was from years ago but im a 15 yro and my name is Cienna. its not a very popular name but it is Italian. it means God is gracious. the name itself isn't trashy and i adore it. i get many many many compliments on how it's spelt and usually when i run into someone who knows italian they're able to pronounce my name. however my name was americanized growing up so people in school thought Sienna/ Cienna was the same.
