I think its more commonly spelled Rebecca these days, although I have noticed this site says its misspelled too. The original is Rebekah as it is that way in the Bible, where the name originates!

My name is Rebecca, and I really wish it were spelled Rebekah or Rebecka.

Rebekah is from the Bible and is the more original way but Rebecca is actually considered the more traditional way because it has been the most common way too spell it for a ver long time. I like Rebecca best, I really do not care for Rebekah. GL!

I think Rebekah would be the original way because that’s how it’s spelled in the Bible. I personally like Rebekah much better than Rebecca.

The Bible was written in Hebrew, which has an entirely different alphabet, therefore "Rebekah" is no more original than "Rebecca". The authorized King James version uses both: "Rebekah" in the Old Testament (see Genesis) and "Rebecca" in the New Testament (see Romans). The translators probably did this to reflect as well as they could the Hebrew and Greek spellings. I’m actually a little surprised to know that "Rebecca" was used to represent the Greek spelling, since it uses the letter "c" when it’s the Greek alphabet that donated the letter "k" to the Latin alphabet in the first place (I suspect you already know this, but the Latin alphabet is the one we’re using now - it would be a mistake to call it the "English" alphabet). I wonder if "Rebecca" might have actually originated in the Latin Vulgate. I don’t have a copy handy - do any of you know?

At any rate, neither spelling would have been very commonly given to kids in Christian Western Europe before the Reformation, so I think it’s safe to treat both of the King James spellings as pretty much "original" for our purposes here. Just go ahead and pick whichever you prefer the look of.

My vote goes to "Rivkah", as that actually is the most accurate to the Hebrew, and it sounds pretty to boot.

Ever since the original English translation of the Bible (King James Version), which was first translated in the year 1611, the name has been spelled "Rebecca" in Romans 9:10. So, both spellings are Biblical. Rebecca is the standardized spelling, most commonly used ever since the Pilgrims came to America.

Some people mistakenly assume that "Rebekah" is the Biblical spelling, but "Rebecca" is in the English Bible too (see Romans 9:10). Not only that… "Rebecca" is actually the OLDER Biblical spelling." The ancient Latin Vulgate (compiled in the 4th Century A.D.) was the version of the Bible that was used within the church for centuries. The Latin Vulgate uses the spelling "Rebecca" exclusively. Centuries later, when the Bible was translated into English in the year 1611 (King James Version), the spelling was altered to "Rebekah" for the Old Testament, but the spelling "Rebecca" was retained in the New Testament (see Romans 9:10). So the older Biblical spelling is "Rebecca," but both spellings are in the original English Bible. Here is a link to view Genesis 49:31 in the Latin Vulgate that spells the name "Rebecca." http://www.latinvulgate.com/verse.aspx?t=0&b=1&c=49

Yes, the spelling "Rebecca" was used in the Latin Vulgate from the 4th century A.D. So, it is an older Biblical spelling than "Rebekah."

my names Rebecca, but I prefer Rebekah.

It may underline Rebecca in red because the words put in the programs are from the dictionary, and the dictionary doesn’t inculde names

My name is spelled Rabecka and I’m so proud of it, but it gets kind of annoying when your name is always being spelled wrong. I didn’t realize until a few years ago, (I’m only 14) that my spelling of Rabecka was that uncommon .
