Yumi vs. What do you think?
My husband and I both love the name Yumi, a Japanese name meaning Beauty. The problem: neither of us are Japanese. I don’t think it’s an issue, but my husband is not so sure. He is afraid that his Japanese business partners might be insulted or think that we are trying to coopt their culture. What do you think?

In theory, I don’t think the name Yumi is bad, but in regular life, I think your daughter is going to get weird looks (unless you are of Asian descent). I personally know a woman of Irish descent whose mother named her Wing-Yan and she recieves comments constantly about her name. Despite our global world, I don’t think Asian names have gained the same acceptance as say names from western Europe. As for your husband’s Japanese partners, I don’t know if they would be bothered or not. They might just see that you appreciate their culture so much that you want to make it an important aspect of your daughter’s identity, which is pretty cool.

Sorry, I would have to say no. I imagine its pronounced "YOU-me" but think that she might get called Yummy!
A name that reflected her heritage would be lovely.

I would also say no... Would you use it as a middle name? There are a lot of names that would go well with Yumi as a middle name. Or maybe you could use it as a nickname, regardless of what you name her. Just make it your own personal pet name for her =)
I agree, if you aren’t Japanese, don’t use Yumi as a first name. Middle name maybe. GL!

I would say no. She’ll get teased because of the way it’s spelled - kids will call her yummy and it’ll drive her nuts.
It’s great for a middle name though!

Thanks everyone. Our families are both Irish Catholic, so I think we will go with options two or three: Esther or Claire.

I think it would be hard for her - she will be called Yummy. She’s going to have to explain that name to people all of her life. Why not give her a more culturally consistent name and save Yumi for a pet?

Asian cultures are so vastly different from ours that certain things we wouldn’t be bothered by they can take great offense to. For example in one Asian country (forgive me, I forget which one)it is considered bad manners to finish everything on your plate. However I’ve recently learned that the Chinese often give their children a Chinese name and an American name, so maybe you’ll find a nice Chinese name you like?
