Isla vs. Eila
HELP! Please vote & comment. We are set on the name eye-luh for our baby girl. Now, which spelling? Isla or Eila? I thought Isla but now I’m afraid people will pronounce it ees-luh. So I thought maybe Eila...like the "Ei" sound in Eileen? And, I don’t like Ila because it looks like two upper case I in a row or two lower case L next to each other. Too short and incomplete. Hummm, what do you think?!
The Top Baby Name is...

Isla is becoming so popular now I don’t think you’ll have pn issues. However, I think Eila will cause spelling issues!

Isla is pronounced eye-lah...like Island. You would only get the ees-lah mispronounciation from possibly a native Spanish speaker and you can simply correct them of their error. I like Isla the best! Eyela looks icky and creepy.

I think that Isla is your best choice. When I read it I think of island and pronounce it that way, which I’m sure most people would too. Eila would cause many more spelling and pronounciation errors in my opinion.

First of all to pp, pronouncing Isla as ees-lah is NOT an error that needs correcting... it IS the pronunciation of tha word/name. You make it sound like there may be an occasional Spanish-speaking person who may do this, but there are over 13 MILLION people in the U S whose first language is Spanish and who would pronounce it this way. I think Ila might be the least mispronounced option. It’s a pretty name.

It IS an error if that’s not how the kid’s NAME is pronounced! And correction is necessary to get her NAME right. I like Isla spelling best. And how do you know the poll poster is American? Arrogant, Lark!

I am leaning towards the spelling Eila fir my baby.I like the meaning better (oak tree) and it is pronounced as eileen is (eye la). As for mis pronounciation plenty of people will anoinciated isla as izla. And even if she had to spell it out, many people have to do that with at least their last names. Not scarring. Just ignorance. Lastly, I am going with Eila, simply because I don’t like the pet name of izzy, or iz, which isla often becomes. Good luck with your decision!

Eila from what I understand is a Sanskrit word meaning Earth and a Hebrew word meaning Oak Tree. I think it’s beautiful and much less confusing that Isla, which will often get pronouced Eesla, since that\’s the Spanish pronunciation of island.

Choose the name of your baby by the meaning it can carry, she’ll fell happier to have a name with such amount of beautiful stories behind, this is my name and I love it. Many people misspell it but that’s the sauce of life! It’s easier to break the ice when you have an uncommon name!

My name is Eila and people misspell and mispronounce it every day. I honestly don’t think that isla is any better than Eila or vice versa, just be prepared for all of the misspellings and mispronunciation a either way
