Madelyn vs. Madeline vs. Madeleine
Hey Everyone! So I’m having a hard time figuring this out. I started ut loving the name Madison, but frankly, its too popular for my taste. So, I also love Mah-da-lynn and Mah-da-line. However, which spelling goes with each name? and How is Madeleine pronounced? and which is your favorite?

I looked it up on SSA’s website. Madison was number 7 for 2009. Madeline was 64, Madelyn was 59 and Madeleine was 331. So its not that popular, at least not as much as Madison.

The reason it has lower rankings is because it has so many spelling options. Most Madisons are Madison. Madeleine can be spelled many different ways, and it is--so none of the spellings ranks as high, but if all spellings are combined (since, for all intents and purposes, they sound the same when pronounced), it’s equally popular.n

Yeah, I looked at that but none of them are really high enough to make it as popular as number 7.

Also keep in mind that popularity varies by region and socioeconomic status. Madison is probably more popular in younger, less-educated circles, while Madeleine (and its variants) is more popular in coastal, well-educated circles.

PP-- What makes you think that Madison is associated with less-educated circles? Because it isn’t Pompous enough?

Eh, she’s not the only one who thinks that Madeleine sounds classier than Madison! That’s beside the point, though, since the poll poster isn’t considering Madison anymore, anyway.

Madelyn - Mad-EH-LYNNN.
Madeline - Mad-Eh-LINE.
Madeleine - Mad-EH-LEHN.
If you say Madeleine fast, it should sound like MAHD-LEHN.

My name is Madeline, I’m 20, and my name has always been pronounced Mad-a-linn. I’ve rarely have a problem with people saying it wrong. Madeline is the Anglicized form of the French name Madeleine. When I’ve studied in France people add in the extra e, so that it better fits their language rules. But, here in the US, it’s never been a problem.
I love my name, and it’s been the perfect differentiator from every other girl my age who went by Maddie (also Maddy/Madi/Madie/Mady) and was named Madison. In a high school class of 156 girls, I was the only Madeline. It was unique, while not being odd.

I named my daughter Madeliene and we pronounce it Mad-e-line (like the little girl from the story books). No one can ever pronounce it correctly.
