How can you be sure you’re naming your daughter this, but not be sure of the spelling? What led you to choose the name: just the sound? OK, but shouldn’t you say to yourself "hmm, I like the sound of that... however, I’d better make sure I find out something about the name before going ahead with it"? I ask because if you do that it should be clear that the name is McKenna, since it’s a family name from Scotland. Those other spellings have (sorry) come from people hearing McKenna and just going with the way they think it’s spelled. Taking a real, existing name that has a history, and using a phonetic spelling of it is, in my opinion, not the best way to name one’s child. The child will have to answer questions about it, and those more well-read, cultured, or linguistically aware will know, upon meeting them, that her parents were not paying attention. It’s unfair to your kid. Good luck!

First of all, the poster before needs to chill out. Its all about how you want the name pronounced. If I see a girls name is Ashlee or Kelli, I dont think "wow what kinda parents did she have!" Please! Its just a way of making your childs name a little more unique. Id like to know what kind of "questions" the child will have to answer to...

Anyway, I absolutely LOVE the name Makenna. Its number one of my list for a girl. My husband and I debated between Makenna and Mckenna. We determined that (for us atleast) it was about pronounciation...in our minds, Makenna is pronounced MAH-KENNA and Mckenna pronounced MIK-KENNA. But maybe thats too subtle to even notice for most people, but for me, I wanted her name pronounced MAH instead of MIK. Just my personal preference, but overall I think its a beautiful name :)

This is not really about spelling. Ashlee or Kelli? OK, the difference is that people still know that the parents KNEW what the original name was when they chose it, and chose to spell it in a slightly different way. (I question your assertion about uniqueness, but that’s a larger discussion.) Plus, it’s not all about how you want the name pronounced: those names get pronounced the same way even with those alternate spellings.

With Makenna/McKenna, you kind of prove my point in your discussion about pronounciation: you’re saying you were aware of it, but like I said, chose a phonetic spelling so it would look and sound the same way you wanted it to. It’s a nice-sounding name as McKenna too, because one does not have to say MIK-KENNA; most people who say McKenna really say it MIH/MAH-KENNA and spell it the way it’s spelled. I guess I don’t understand specifically picking a less-than-common name, with a history of its own, and choosing to alter it because you want to make sure people say it exactly right. The name was spelled the way it was for a reason; it is what it is. Why don’t you think it will come across as A. uninformed B. trendy C. cutesy, etc?

By way of context, people are doing this with a bunch of names. Look at Michaela: that’s become Makayla, etc. because that’s what Michaela sounds like. Shouldn’t a name mean something? Or does it just have to sound nice? Unusual names are one thing (I like them - I’m not advocating boring names for everyone) - but shouldn’t there be a real reason behind it, for the kid’s benefit? If you aren’t sure why... Sorry - just trying to help. This naming is serious business. :-)

I was maybe considering Makenna.. having nothing to do with the last name Mckenna but that it was the name of the shots I was being given during my pregnancy to not have a pre-term labor.. "Makena" to be exact.. and that also seems to have a Hawaiian origin meaning [abundance]
