Which spelling vs. for Mikayla?

My husband and I have fallen in love with the name Mikayla. I normally choose the traditional spellings of any name and in this case it is Michaela. But I dont like it at all. I dont think it looks feminine or pretty. I know a lot of people would disagree with me on this and I completely understand but it just doesnt sit with me right. In fact none of the spellings sit with me right! Ive seen several different options: Makayla, Mikayla, Micaela, Mikaela, McKayla, Macaila, Etc. My husband is German and their way of spelling is Michaela. I am Ukrainian and our way of spelling is either Mikayla or Mikhaila. Trying to find a spelling that I think is pretty and feminine is giving me a headache and I almost want to scrap the name but we love it so much! How can a spelling really defer you from a name??? So to tie it up in a nutshell: Love the name, do not want too much of a trendy spelling (i.e. Mckayla), DO NOT like the traditional spelling, want it to be feminine just like the name itself. Do I keep the name? Do I find another one? Middle name will be Catherine. Mikayla Catherine Makayla Catherine Mikaela Catherine Michaela Catherine or Mikayla Katherine Makayla Katherine Mikaela Katherine Michaela Katherine I really need some advice on this one! Please give me any and all thoughts on this name and spelling. I know most people are inclined to the traditional spelling but it just looks too masculine to me and if you dont think so then please tell me why. Maybe im looking at this all the wrong way!

I honestly agree with you, I don’t like the traditional way of spelling Michaela, it just looks like you threw an A at the end of Michael. My favorite way of spelling it is Makayla.
Makayle Catherine would be lovely, I think if you spelled Catherine with a K it would be too repetitive. Good luck!

I like either the traditional (sorry) or Mikaela. Think about how it would look on a resume (CV) -which name would be more professional looking?

I like to spell it the way it sounds, which to me is:
Makayla

I definitely think that spelling looks the best and the most feminine. And you shouldn’t get over the name, if you love it then you’ll just get used to whatever spelling you go with. And my fav spelling for the mn is Kathryn.

Makala Kathryn=Beautiful

That’s funny, I’ve been struggling with a similar problem.

I too, typically prefer traditional spellings. In my case, I like the name Alistair, but don’t like the spelling(thought it would be mispronounced). Decided to spell it Alister instead.

I think you’re fine with Makayla or Mikayla. It’s not an unheard of variation. I like Makayla. GL

I think Mikayla or Makayla are much better than the traditional spelling. Whenever I see Michaela I want to pronounce it Michael-uh and when I see Michaella I always think it’s Michael-ella. I would stay away from that.

i only like Michaela really. Mikaela is okay but the others just look too made up. i don’t see the need to butcher an already pretty and unique name. the whole point of the name Michaela is that it is the feminine form of Michael that’s why it’s Michael with an a on the end, because that’s what makes it feminine like Robert and Roberta, Gabriel and Gabriela.

I really dislike Michaela. It just looks so...ugly. No offense to anybody, but honestly I respectfully dislike that spelling of a beautiful name. I like Mickayla and Mikayla the best. I also, I like Makalya. GL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :-)

My name's M'Kayla with an apostrophe. Tidbit of info, if you have another kid, DON'T give them names with a hyphen, apostrophe, or otherwise. The cons just out way the pros.

Pros
Love it
Makes it unique
Attention
Funny mispronounciations

Cons
To many mispronounciations
People ALWAYS replace it with an i
Computer replaces it with #&39! or something along those lines.
People asking "What's it stand for?" IT STANDS FOR A FUDGIN APOSTROPHE!
Okay I'm done warning/ranting , good luck.

This post could have been written by me as I struggled for months in the exact same way in choosing the spelling of my daughter's name. I ended up choosing Mikayla Grace. Everyone seems to have their own nickname variation such as Miki, Kayla, Mika.

I wish I had seen this earlier but this is what I see.
Feminine vs Masculine

Feminine - Makayla
Ma - Mary, Margaret, Madeline, +
Kay - Kay, Katherine, Kathy, +
La - Latrice, Lachel, Lacey, ±

Masculine
Ma - you will not find too many in the English language
Kay - you will find next to none
La - you will find a few more than the other two listed above. When you pronounce "La" in the English language, "La" just sounds more ladylike.
Mi, Mic, Mike, Mc - to me looks and sounds very masculine and you will find quite a few male names with these letters.

I don't know any other languages other than English, but I hope this helps if it is not too late.

Good Luck

I love what you and your husband chose, but more importantly is that you two are happy with your choice. Congratulations with your new bundle of joy.

I agree that Makayla sounds feminine, but there are also many masculine names spelled with those sounds.

Masculine
Ma - Mark, Martin, Malvin, Malcolm, Matthew, Max, Mack, Mason ...
Kay - Kayden, Caden, Kane, Kayleb
La - Lawrence, Lachlan, Larry
