Collins vs. Use it vs. Dont
We really like the name Collins for our little girl. Only problem is it sort of runs into our last name, it starts with an s and ends with an s. Call me crazy but there is a good chance she will get married some day and change her last name, right? Basically she’s always going to have to say Collin with an s but I figure she would have to do that no matter what our last name was. So would we be crazy to name her Collins? Should we just go with it or ditch it and find something else? Let us know what you think..
The Top Baby Name is...

It sounds like she’s talking about something that belongs to Collin.
Hi! I’m Collins.
...Collin’s what? sister?
Just my opinion, I’m not a fan, if you love it go for it!

Just making a last name guess, but Collins Sanders, sounds like Collin Sanders. Which sounds like a boy. I wouldn’t think Collins was a girl either though, so... go with your gut.

I have never seen the appeal in this name. Collin alone is a boy name, so I don’t see how adding an S makes it feminine. And I agree with the second poster about the "Collin’s what?" thing.

Well, Collins Sanders, sounds like Colonel Sanders.
Collins Smith just isn’t great.
Women in the south who have surname/first names were typically named after someone in the family.
If you really like the style, research your own family tree for something similar-hopefully a bit more feminine and not ending in s!

My cousin has done that! Her new baby daughter is Collins and their surname begins with an s and it does sound like the boy’s name: Collin S... Secretly not many in the family think it was a nice choice, but they love it and I am sure we’ll get more used to it. Personally though, I think when the s blends with the last name and makes it sound like a boy, I would avoid it. Sorry

Collins is from The Blind Side and I think it’s a cute girl name. But it’s not going to work if your last name starts with an s and ends with an s or else for ex like someone has already mentioned, Collins Sanders. The s completely cuts out into the last name. Its like a baby name rule even mentioned in the baby book. You can always hyphenate the name I guess with her dads if you guys are not married yet from what I understood in your poll description.

i don’t care for it sorry, i think it sounds more like a boy name, if it runs into your last name then don’t use it, she might not get married and even if she does, there’s no law that says she has to change her last name, or she might want a double last name, the name that you give her now, fn and ln might be with her until she’s 25 or 30, or she might not get married at all. how about
something "unisex"
Harper
Piper
Riley
Casey
something girly..
Mercy
Amelia
Emma
Cathleen
if you really want to use it, you could change it a little to make it more girly and not run into your last name, Collyn?, wdyt?

Here’s the thing... my surname is Collins. I have a son, and his last name is Collins. What if your daughter happened to fall in love with someone who’s last name is Collins, and become Collins Collins? This is why I think surname names for girls are a bad idea... so your idea that she might change her last name in the future is a little flawed. What might end up happening is her changing her first name in the future!!

How do you know your daughter won’t fall in love with someone with the last name Collins? Then she’d be Collins Collins, or she could keep her maiden name, but then it’s still a lose lose situation...

I LOVE Collins on a girl. We are naming our baby girl this but our last name starts with a "B". I think that if you really love it you should use it. Are there better names to use with a "S" last name, sure but if you truly love it....do it.

I will be naming my daughter collins marlee I love it I think its classy. Our last name starts with a L. But you either love it or hate it. When people say they hate it I ask what they named their children and I hate their choices. Collins is original I hate common names they have no thought.

Collins is my daughter’s name. She will be two soon. We love it and MOST people that are young enough to have children do too. My guess is the people suggesting names like "Colleen" are older.... or at least I pray no one is still naming their child Colleen. And not a girl’s name? People that say that can suck it, I hate names like Daisy and Elsie aka ’cutsie’ girl names. I also don’t think it is "south and hillbilly" at all, I feel it’s more urban or athletic. Our other daughter’s name is Brecken. And if we have another I’m shooting for Carsyn or Carter. I like different names for kids, I’m a Jennifer and seriously had 8 Jennifers in my class. Beat the norm. And as far as an S for your last name, how many times will last and first name be said together? Not often, maybe at school. And in that case there is a pause. Collins Sanders. Collins L. Sanders, etc. Our girls’ names: Collins Riley and Brecken Taylor. Give her a girly middle name if you’re worried about gender. Collins Nicole, Collins Elyse, etc.

I agree 100% with the pp. And hilarious about the ’Colleen’ comment! You would hope not! I love love love Collins and I’m not even pregnant yet (we love Carsyn too! Lol). It’s my number one choice. It’s different, classy and urban-we live downtown Chicago....where South or hillbilly. I think if someone likes a name, use it! Never understood the comments about the ’ownership’ of a name just because it’s a family name. On another note, God made us all different and gave us different opinions. This world would be a pretty boring place if we were all alike! That is why I will never ask anyone’s opinion on a name when we have to choose except for my hubby :) I took my mom and my mom ONLY bridal gown shopping.... Go for it!

I named my daughter Collyns and everyone absolutely loves it! I went on here and asked for opinions and it was always an overwhelming no, but everyone tells me it is the cutest name ever. Also, I thought having a name that ends in "S" would be a problem and it isn’t. GO FOR IT!

I think it is great! My last name is Collins and I’m from a family of all girls so my father’s last name ends with us. I plan on using Collins for my first Daughters name "Collins Marie". Half the tome people dont even remember your name when you first introduce yourself, and its unique. If worse case scinerio people think ur childs name is Collin who cares women have boy names all the time...Plus if your worried about you child marrying another with the same last name that’s rediculously b/c you have to take into consideration the odds and who says the women has to take the mans/significantothers last name anymore. If you love it go with it I plan on it. Everyone else will just have to get used to it. ;)

We are naming our daughter Collins as well as my last name starts with an S. I was having a problem with it for awhile but figured we both love the first name and in all reality no one really uses their first & last name together all that often. Her middle name is Rebecca, so at her graduation they will announce her full name, first middle & last instead of just first and last name.
We wanted something different but not too out there like Apple :)
