Lucien vs. Lucian

We saw the name Lucian on this site yesterday while checking out names and fell in love. We like the spelling Lucien and Lucian. We were wondering how you pronounced it. I’ve heard Loosh-in and Lu-see-in. One of our fellow baby-namers had a son named Lucian who had the nickname Luke. We were also wondering if that would work. Maybe spelled Luc? Please tell us your thoughts.

To me, Lucien is pronounced Loo-See-En and Lucian is pronounced Loo-Shin. Lucien is the French variant. Much like how Sebastien and Sebastian are pronounced differently.

I personally adore this name but I went to highschool with a boy whose last name was Lucian, so I’d never be able to get away with it.

Loo-shin is how we pronounce it and yes Luc is perfectly acceptable spelling for a nickname. :)

My little boy is Lucien. We thought we would shorten it to Luc but as the c is soft we have found ourselves calling him either his full name or Lou/Louie. It’s getting a little more popular where we are in the UK. We’ve had some mixed reactions, but on the whole it’s been positive. It’s viewed as quite a posh/sophisticated name in England. Go for it

By the way we pronounce it lu-cee-en, as do most people in the UK, which I much prefer. It’s also the correct way to pronounce the Lucien spelling, whereas as Lucian is "loo-shin" Maybe decide on the pronunciation you prefer then go for that spelling

I love The name Lucian and pronounce it Loo-shian. the spelling Lucien looks good too but i think like past posts that Lucien is French and pronounced Loo-see-in. I don’t like it pronounced like Loo-see-in at all. i love it as Loo-shian.

My son is Lucian Mackenzie, we pronounce it Loo-shun and not loo-shin - soft emphasis on the u. Its the only boys name we could agree on and my 5 year old daughter corrects everyone who mis-pronounces it, its a shame he won’t be able to take her to school with him when he goes!

My son is Lucian Maximilian, we pronounce it Loo-shun too. It was the only name my husband and I could agree on! We do have to correct people who insist on calling him loo-see-in though, maybe it’s because we’re in the UK? We love it though, and it really suits him :)

Lucien, the french nickname, is actually impossible to pronounce correctly for an American, and even really hard for someone from UK. The sound U in french is really different from the "iou" you guys pronounce, and it’s the same thing for the "ien".
My nickname is Julien and i’m always called Julian, pronounced "Djou-liane".
Try a google translate and hear the pronounciation of Lucien in french, you’ll see how hard it is :)

My son is Lucien. I would spell it whichever way looks best with your last name. We pronounce it LOO-shen since he was about 2yo. We started off calling him Loo-see-en but kids started calling him Lucy at daycare as a nickname and that drove me crazy. Now he is in 1st grade and we have been calling him LOO-shen for years and have had no issues.

My sons name is Lucian but said very differntly from any of the pronouncements that I have heard before.

We say it as luken but spelt lucian due to a lot of reasons. The c is pronounced as a k like cat. To make the flow of the ian go quick is just -an-
But not spelt -can- otherwise it would sould like a can.
We didn’t use the spelling luken or lukin it wouldn’t sound nice. So lu-cian has a better flow.

Hey you people. My name is Lucian, I’m from Romania where it is a very common name and it’s pronounced "Lou-chi-an", like Luciano in Italian. I’m having a heck of a hard time introducing myself here in the US.

My great-grandfather was named Lucien, as was his son. Although we live in New England now, they were all from Quebec. They pronounced it LOO-shen. But they also had a son named Armand whose name was pronounced AH-mand so I guess they used the anglicized versions of the names.

My son's is Lucien after his great grandfather. We live in the US. When he was born we called him Lu-see-en. However, at daycare they started to call him Lucy Goosey as his nick name and for some reason people had trouble in general pronouncing it so we changed the pronunciation to Lu-shen and have no problems. It's easier for Americans to pronounce now. We always get compliments on his name as being very "cool".
