Francis boy vs. Frances girl
I’m just curious as to what people’s opinions are on this. A friend of mine recently had a baby girl and named her Francis. I know both names sound identical but Francis traditionally is the male spelling and Frances is female and seems so strange to me to mix them up. When she first told me her baby’s name, before I heard about the spelling, I thought it was beautiful, but then she said: "but I’m spelling it with an I to be different". Anyway, the point I’m trying to make is: do you think that with today’s trends of alternate spellings and unisex names, traditional spelling should still matter? If I’d have seen the name written down first I would have assumed she had made a spelling mistake.

We have boys named Francis and girls named Frances so why did your friend feel the need to be "different"? She just adds to the confusion of unisex names. Most people will think her daughter is a boy when her name is written out. Not cool.

Maybe she secretly wanted a boy. That’s the impression I would get by using the traditional male spelling. I think it was very silly of her.

Brooke Shields has a daughter named Rowan Francis and she spelled it this way in honor of her father. I think this is a different case that your friend. I think she did it for the shock value. I’m not impressed.

I wanted outside opinions to make sure it wasn’t just me being a bit stuffy but it seems that others agree with me. Now I’m not sure if I should hold my tongue or say something while her daughter is still only a few days old
