Caroline vs. Carolyn

My husband and I have decided to name our coming daughter Caroline...but I was watching 16 & Pregnant today and say a couple decide on the name Carolyn and I love the pronounciation Carol-lynn better than Carol-line but hate it spelled with a y...Can we go ahead with Caroline but pronounce it Carol-lynn or should we alternate the spelling?

Caroline would always get pronounced wrong. If you must use a different spelling then maybe Carolin?

Caroline is actually pronounced both ways, making Carolyn not a separate name but a phonetic way to spell it. I’d go with Caroline and pronounce it the way you want.

Ok, good, I wasn’t sure if you could pronounce it both ways. I just think Caroline spelled anyother way looks weird. I just hope it doesn’t cause her too much complication in the future.

I would only ever pronounce Caroline as "Carol-line." I also think it is much prettier than Carolyn, but that’s not up to me. If you don’t like the "y." Then I definitely think you would have to go with Carolin or Carolinn or even Caralin if changing the "a" interests you at all. I think spelling it "Caroline" will not get you the pronunciation you want. 9 time out of 10, if not 10 out of 10 times.

My sister is a Caroline (Cahr-o-line), but people are always calling her Carolyn, which drives her crazy. So, if you spell it Caroline, she’ll probably get called each name about half of the time.

Caroline is definitely pronounced both ways. Go for it. The people she sees everyday will know how to pronounce it, so it’s no problem.

Please no! My daughter is Caroline (Cahr O Line) and it is my pet peeve that she gets called Carolyn.

My name is spelled Caroline pronounced like Carolyn. I prefer the way the spelling looks too but it is kind of a [removed] correcting people all the time. Even after I correct them some people still call me Caroline forever and I get lazy and give up. If I had to choose my name I might have gone Carolynne.
