Silas-- vs. Why so popular?

I’ve seen the name Silas suddenly emerge on this site and people are falling all over it. Usually when this happens, I learn later that there is a t.v. show with a character by the same name. Not being a t.v. watcher, I’d like to know why this name is seeing such a surge in popularity. Thanks!

Not sure why it’s so popular but I can say that it’s on my list of favorite boys names..it to me is a very strong name and one that will age very well!

As far as I’m aware there’s not currently a TV show with a Silas on it?
I guess it’s kind of a cool, masculine sounding name (like Jude or Sly) but is traditional enough to not sound like it should be on "Teen Mom"

Very cool name, I’ve heard it only a few times. The only Silas I can think of from tv is the oldest son on Weeds.

I haven’t heard Silas on a TV show. I was set on the name Eli Connor for my baby boy up until a month ago when I re-read the novel Silas Marner and I fell in love with the name Silas. Now I’m going back and forth between the two names. I’m not sure why it’s gone up in popularity recently. I know a lot of older classic names are becoming more popular recently, including Silas, but I don’t think Silas will become one of those names that are in the Top 10 most common baby names, like the names Jacob, John, and Noah. So if you want to use the name Silas, I think it’s okay, it’s not too common.

Its very common in my town theres probably 25 silas all under 3 yrs. I do know its was sorta popular along time ago. I think its a cute name but would never use it because i live in a very small town where being a teen mother is the cool thing to do i guess and they all have used that name

There is a Silas on Weeds but thats been around awhile and theres a Silas in the "Casters Chronicles" books Beautiful Creatures is the 1st and the 1st 3 are out. But i cant imagine that a lot of these people would be reading young adult books... Then again a lot of women read twilight, maybe im wrong? Have to say i used to hate the name but its starting to grow on me.

We named our little one Silas (born April 2014). We aren’t TV watchers and got it from the list of names from the 1800s (social security site). We wanted an older biblical name that went with our other children’s names (that started with an S). I used to dislike it, I thought it was too uncommon, but it grew on me. People have asked us if we got it from the Duck show so I looked it up. We have a Sadie too! Born in 2007. Interesting to read other comments! Some may not like it, but it sure fits our little guy. It means "third" and he is our third :p. He’s a sweet boy, so hopefully no one will judge him by their dislike for his name.

My Silas was named in 2008. He’s our third boy so we searched hard for a unique )without being ridiculous) masculine name that would transition effortlessly from infancy through adulthood without much opportunity for silly nicknames. Our first son is 12 ... Mason. Ugh! My crystal ball was broken that day! He’s still the only one in his class but I hear the name called left and right daily now. My second is Mathis. Very proud to have a unique name at the age of 9! Silas is a great name ... I just hope it isn’t the "it" name in a few years. FYI blame Hollywood for the Mason epidemic and Silas could be next!

Does anyone on here watch the soap opera General Hospital? Silas was a mysterious type of man recently on the show. The character is no longer There but was for a week while.the name Silas is also in the Bible. He was a missionary for Jesus We Named our son silas but we spell it Sylis . Sylis Cole. Also there is a video cowboy game with the name Silas Grieves. But the name is an old name. I’ve had so many older people tell me they haven’t heard that name in ages. So it’s bit starting up. It’s just coming back. I absolutely love it. Sylis fits my son so well.

Silas is a character on the movie despicable me, as well. I didn't realize this until after I named my son Silas, 12-29-16. I probably just didn't notice the name before. I don't know any others and most people who hear his name say they've never heard it or that it is unique. I'm not sure where I heard it or saw it, but I do like it a lot. As others have said, it will age nicely. :)

Our son, Silas Matthew is our third child, and the name also means "third one" as several here have also found. We call him Sy and like that it is different from Ty, which is very common today. We spell this nickname with a 'y' because Si looks like the Spanish word for Yes. I think it is a sexy name...don't know why. Just always loved it. He is a super sweet teenager now, very popular, and the name fits him well.

It's on Duck Dynasty (Uncle Si), Weeds, Vampire Diaries, the Big Valley, the Davinci Code. Novel - Silas Marner. He's a saint (accompanied Paul on second mission). Silas has actually been used quite a bit and has been around quite a while, yet no one seems to notice it's popularity.
