Noel vs. Noelle
I love the middle name Noel for my daughter. I prefer this spelling because I like the Christmas meaning behind it. I realize Noel for a boy can also be spelled this way. Do you think it’s fine to go ahead and spell it Noel? Thanks for your input!

I love Noel, I’ve never seen that name used on a boy and I think it’s great. Noelle looks more femenine but I prefer the original spelling Noel. Other versions are Natalie and Natasha, they aren’t as obvious but have the exact same meaning as Noel.

If you use Noël, make sure to use the proper accent above the ’E’. Otherwise use Noelle; the elle is used exclusively for French girl names. Examples: Gabrielle, Rachelle, Isabelle, Abrielle, Anabelle, Anabelle, Aubrielle, Danielle, Janelle, Maribelle ect (you get the picture).

If I don’t use the dots over the e then is it pronounced Nole? I’m confused because the Christmas word is pronounced Noel with this spelling?? thanks, poll maker

Yup. In French the word for Christmas, Noël, MUST have those accents on it. Noël is a unisex name, but Noelle is the feminine form.

Don’t use the dots, they’re just confusing. It doesn’t HAVE to have the ’dots’, in English we don’t use accents unlike in France, so the English spelling wouldn’t use the accent over the E.
I know someone who is from Africa and has an exclamation point in their name to represent a click, and no one expects the English language to make an exception for him when pronouncing his name.
Basically, only worry about the accent if you’re going to a country where they use them, if not it’s completely irrelevent. No one will confuse the name Noel with Nole, with or without accents.

Poster, where do you live? US, Canada, Europe? Everyone always complains that Americans are lazy about, well everything, including names. The name REQUIRES ë. Don’t be lazy and screw up the name because you’re not used to it. You like the name, then spell it / use it correctly. Or you could do the only other responsible thing and use the name Noelle (the feminine form).
Noël gets my vote.
