Niamh vs. Neave vs. Nieve

Or suggest a different spelling..? I like Niamh (pronounced Nee-ve), but my husband worries about the spelling being difficult for people to pronounce. We live in Australia, its not a common name, but not unheard of and I would prefer to keep it with the traditional Irish spelling. What do you think?

I’m also Australian and as you said while it’s not common, it’s also not unheard of here. I would say it’s gaining popularity and most people recognise the traditional Irish spelling. Nieve likes like it should be pronounced ni-eve, so i wouldn’t go with that spelling!

i like Niamh best, i’m half Irish and would prefer to keep the original spellings where possible, Neave looks trendy, and Nieve is Spanish for snow, pronounced nee-ay-veh. there’s also Neve, but some people might pronounce that nev rather than neeve. i suppose you could do Neev or Neeve. i think once people know how to pronounce it, it’s not going to be that much of an issue, it’s in the top 100 in Ireland and England, and getting more usage in America, so i’m sure will be starting to recognise it more

Niamh is the best. I live in NZ and am part Irish, that is why I know how it is spelt. A girl is my course is called Niamh and the lecturer continues to call her Neam, but the whole class knows he is saying it wrong! So some people will struggle but the next generation will have it easier thanks to girls like ’Neam’!
