How would you vs. pronounce Micajah?
I found this name on my family tree.... this ancestor fought in the Revolutionary war and died in the early 1800s. I think it’s a pretty cool name! I don’t know if there is a "right" way to pronounce it since it’s so uncommon. So if you saw it written down, how would you pronounce it?

It is a very common name in the Merryman family genealogy (you can google Micajah Merryman) and still used in parts of the south. All of the genealogy books list the pronunciation as "cage" and in some of the genealogies the the common usage name was written that way. From the explanation in the books the M was either silent or a very soft m sound at the beginning. Sorta, M’cage, the ’a’ being a long ā.

I believe that everyone who is posting the spelling has Muh(like mustard) Kay(like Kayak) yuh (like young) is correct - - but others pronouncing it like Cage are correct too. It’s one of those names that it depends on what part of the country and where you decide to put the emphasis on the name. My G G grandfather’s name was Micajah and on the family tree they have "Cage" in the middle of his name as his "nickname"...so I’m guessing that they pronounced his name with the Cage emphasis. The meaning of the name is: Meaning: derived from Michael; one who is like God
Additional Information: Can be found in 2 Kings Ch 22 of the Old Testament. Micaiah is a prophet.

Oh, I forgot to add about name emphasis - I had a coworker who’s name was Debora, most people wouldn’t think twice and would pronounce it as Debra....NOPE it was De-BORE-ah

I have an ancestor named Micajah Smith, but they also include Cage as part of his name. So I'm assuming in his case at least that's was the way they pronounced the caj. He was born 1770 died 1803.
