Has Mercedes become vs. too trashy?

Hi. I have always loved the name Mercedes, because I think it sounds beautiful and it also honours my Spanish heritage, but I’m worried that nowadays people see it more as a trashy name. I used to know 2 women named this, and they were both so elegant and classy and so I have always seen this name as such, but now I’m worried others don’t :/ so wdyt? Trashy or still classy? Thanks, your opinions really are appreciated! (And please no one take offence to this poll!)

I think it is becoming classy again. I know three Mercedes that are my age (27) and they are the definition of "trashy". But I do know two children that are Mercedes and they are the sweetest kids. I think it is coming around to being classy again

I think it’s a bit trashy I’m sorry to say! I too grew up with a girl named Mercedes and she was beautiful. Since then I fear it has now rather bad press just like Portia I think they are generally viewed as stripper names! Sorry! I’d stick with something classic. GL

It’s not the usual Sophia and Elizabeth so that’s it’s seen as low class

I don’t think it’s trashy. I know a wonderful 14 year old girl named Mercedes and it’s a great name.

If you don’t like it, does anyone have any name suggestions, that are still considered traditionally Spanish (eg, names like Sophia & Isabella, have been ruined for me) because I want a Spanish name, that isn’t very common in other countries.

If you love it, go for it! Sadie would be a great nickname.

I think it’s always been tacky. Sadie is nice though.

Hi
Mercedes was a classic name from Spain, and it had class. The Mercedes car was named after a woman. However, there is a 21st century "down market" phenomenon of naming children brand names, ie Lexus, by poor people to add success to the child (unfortunately it’s the worst thing they can do for the child’s success as it screams low-income) and because of this, the perfectly classic Mercedes has become tarnished by association. If you are of obvious old money or have a Spanish surname, this may not affect your family though. If your surname is not spanish, make sure the middle name is also Spanish upper cl[removed]o people will think of Spain and not that you named her after a car.

the word was class

ie,

if the Mercedes has siblings named Carlos and Delores, it’s fine.

if the Mercedes has siblings Bentley and Chianti, it’s a shame.
