Alternate spellings vs. for Aoibheann?
Hello everyone! My name is Madeleine, and my husband Eric and I are expecting our first baby girl, and we want to name her Aoibheann (pronounced Eve-in). We love the name, but for obvious reasons are weary of using the traditional Irish spelling. What do you all think? Should we use an alternate spelling? Thanks!

That’s a tough one, because there is no easy way to spell that.
If you write it down like that, it looks like Evan, or an attempt at a feminine spelling of it. And the fact that it’s ehv and not eev.

The anglicized form of Aoibheann is apparently Eavan.

Definitely use a different spelling. The Irish spelling is just to difficult. Eavan looks nice and will give you the best pronunciation.

I think all the Anglicised spellings look masculine and, to be honest, quite ugly. Aoibheann is a beautiful name and she’ll only have to explain it. I have an Aoife a Daithà and a Caoimhe and, though it throws people at first, we’ve never had any major problems and everyone always says how pretty and unusual they are.
