Bethany vs. Nicknames?
Hi I’m Kate and I’m pregnant with my first. I love the name Bethany but I don’t love Beth as a nn. Is it possible to keep people from calling her Beth? Are there any other nns for Bethany?

I believe it is. People will call her what you call her. If anyone says Beth just kindly remind them her name is Bethany and she doesn’t have a nickname. My name is Jacqueline and everyone calls me Jacqueline.

No. My friend only wanted her child to be called Elizabeth. She was successful until she went to school. Her friends wanted to call her Lizzie. Elizabeth loved Lizzie and would only respond to that. She now goes by Lizzie b/c it isn’t a battle her mother really wanted to have with her.

I agree with poster one, Bethany stands as a name on its own.

I have a friend whose name is Bethany and she hated when people called her Beth. She either went by Bethany or Biev (Bee-ev).

I think it really depends on your child’s personality. If it is an obvious nickname, like Beth, and she wants to go by it, especially when she is a teenager and knows it irks you, then she will do it no matter what you say.

It’ll be up to her. Nicknames usually stick in school. I have a friend who always insisted on being called Carolyn (never Carol) and everyone kept to that. Your daughter may like Beth though and let it become her nickname. You could still call her Bethany at home.

I had this same issue. I loved Bethany but I just didn’t like Beth. Bethany is a diminutive of Elizabeth which Bess can be a nickname for. And I loved Bess. But it was just too much of a risk for me because I did not want her to be called Beth so I had to eliminate it but I still might consider Bess as a possible first name if I have another daughter or Bethany as a middle name.

My cousin is Bethany and has never gone by Beth. However, I understand your wariness. My mother-in-law most frequently calls my daughter by the one nickname I really hate. (She isn’t doing it to be mean though.) This was the one reason I hesitated about choosing this name for my daughter. However, I’m glad that I did choose the name for other reasons and most of the people I know call her by her full name which is what I like best. I only hope she doesn’t decide she wants to use that nickname when she is old enough to talk and express her opinion.

My name is Bethany and to be quite frank, i hate the nickname Beth because it sounds like an old woman. But if you name your child Bethany, they should choose what nickname they want to go by. I have considered going by Bea though.

My name is Bethany, and I typically go by Benni or Bi. I used to go by Beth, but not as much now. I often get called Bi, Ben, Benni, or something relating to those. 😊

My name is Bethany and I go by that. My family and friends tried to call me Beth but I didn't let them as I'm just not a fan of beth. So I think it's up to your child.

My name is Bethany and I just go by that. I let my close friends call me Effie but I generally go by Bethany. My mum didn't want me to be called Beth so I wasn't.
