Orly vs. Aurelie vs. spelling suggestions
If it’s a girl, we’ll be naming our baby Orly after a grandmother. It means “my light” in Hebrew. Our family tradition is to pronounce the O at the beginning like the O at the beginning of “onion,” so the name sounds like Uh-r-lee, but we’re concerned people will mispronounce it and say Oar-lee. How should we spell it? Also, what meaningful Hebrew middle names go with Orly?

I can see the oral sex jokes already :-( not being mean, just stating the obvious
Also, if you’re in America, no one is going to pronounced that properly with that spelling. Life long frustration in repeated her name to everyone.
Just my 2 cents.

You probably will need to correct people with the Orly spelling. But, if the intent is to honor your grandmother, I think you need to spell it the way her name is spelled. Even seemingly straightforward names get mispronounced all the time (my own name included!), so it’s hard to really avoid that altogether anyway. I say spell it Orly.

Please don’t call her Orly. It will be pronounced Oar-lee if you live in America. Aurelie is beautiful and has a great meaning as well. 1000x prettier than Orly.

Aurelie doesn’t even look right, and Orly reminds me of Oral, so there are tons of jokes that could be taken from that. also, Orly isn’t that pretty sounding of a name anyway, so I’d honestly just pick a different name. My husband has a terrible name, so...needless to say, none of my kids even has his name as a middle name. Would have never happened. I told him this after I only knew him two weeks. Maybe use a similar name as the first name, or your grandmas middle name as babys middle name or something like that. GL.

Aurelie is so beautiful!! Orly is a really cute spelling too, but Aurelie just looks extra beautiful. I don’t think anyone will pronounce Orly like you want them to with that spelling, not unless you correct them probably a couple times. But if that spelling is important to you, it’s not the worst thing in the world to have to correct people on how to pronounce a name.
I totally disagree with an above poster who said you should spell it the same in order to honor your grandmother. Some people change spellings and even use different variants of a name to honor a loved one.... the spelling is just adapting and kind of makes it more personal for her while still honoring your grandmother. I really like both, but I vote for Aurelie.

I would find another name, honestly. I’m still not sure what pronunciation you’re looking for and Orly looks sexual and Aurelie doesn’t seem like the right name.

Well, if you DO decide to go with Aurelie, Aurelie happens to be my name! For me it’s always been pronounced like aura-lee except it’s like how in Laura where it’s sometimes supposed to be pronounced like Lora. So I guess it’s actually technically pronounced ora-lee. I think I like my name better than Orly because my name has three syllables and it’s spelled prettier, but it sure does put a lot of confusion into life! Sometimes I just wish I had a name that was at least spelled the same as its pronunciation!
