Searsha vs. Siersha vs. Seirsha
Which alternate spelling for the irish Saoirse? (SEER-sha). We’re Irish-American and love the name Saoirse, but where we live there is no way that anyone will pronounce it or spell it right, so I don’t want to put my daughter through that. I have a reasonably easy name (Jillian) and I always had to correct people, which was annoying! So which spelling do you think is best of you had to choose one besides Saoirse? Thanks!

I really don’t like taking a beautiful Irish name and altering the spelling. I am American and there are so many Irish names I love, but their spellings will make it difficult in the US. That being said, I think the spellings are what make the names beautiful. I would rather you keep the spelling Saoirse or perhaps pick a name that Americans will be able to spell and announce (Fiona, Brigid, etc..)

I would still use Saoirse. Some people may be more familiar with the name/ spelling because of the actress Saoirse Ronan. You’d still have to spell out the name with any of the pronunciations above anyway.

Make people learn it, or choose a different name. Don’t dumb down the name.

DO NOT CHANGE THE SPELLING. I cannot emphasize this enough. If you like Saoirse, keep it the way it is.

As far as I know the proper way to pronounce Saoirse is sur-sha. I remember one time I miss pronounce the name as
sear-sha and liked it better, so I've been looking for alternative spellings for the name I totally mispronounced and like way better so it's technically a made-up name which I think is fine and not appropriating a culture or hurting anything because it's Sur-sha not Sear-sha anyway. Although, Searsha reminds me of the department store Sears in the U.S. so It's not my cup of tea. I like Siersha more.

"As far as I know the proper way to pronounce Saoirse is sur-sha.". That is interesting because during my research folk FROM IRELAND pronounced it differently. Actually exactly like it is "sao" . . . if you look up pronounciation of that portion of the name it is not "sur".
Anyway, it apprears from commentary above to each his/her own. But I, for one, would not bastardize the spelling or pronounciation of any name. It certainly is beautiful as it is. Wish I had known it during an earlier period of my life.
