russian names vs. Boy/Girl Twins
my husband and I are having the most difficult time picking names for our bg twins. He wants Russian names because he is from Russia and he wants the twins names to match their three siblings from his previous marriage. Tatiana(8), Lidiya & Nadia(6). While I on the other hand do not want Russian names for the twins. I want Lauren(Lau-ren) Olivia and Luca Cruz, while my husband wants Oksana and Maksim. Please give your opinion on what we should name our twins. We don’t have much time left before they arrive.
Thanks~Kristen & Aleksandr

Maybe you could compromise? Would he be willing to use the names he chose as middle names? Lauren Oksana and Luca Maksim would be cute (:

Nobody would be able to pronounce Oksana and Maksim. Compromise use the American first names you like(which still go nicely with their older siblings) and let him pic Russian middle names. Besides these are the first babies you get to name not the fourth and fifth.

Nina and Lucy sound Amazing together one Russian and one American. Nina is much easier to pronounce than the names your husband picked but is very pretty and will flow beautifully with all siblings. Each of you pick a middle name.

Poster #6 A Russian and American name is a no because Russians don’t have middle names they have patronymic names which is the fathers first name with an ovich ending for boys and ovna ending for girls.

Maybe try picking some Russian names that sound more Americanized or pick an American name which has Russian origins? You really shouldn’t have to pick names you hate just to match their siblings. You didn’t get a say on the older childrens names. But by the same token he shouldn’t have to live with names he hates. Find a compromise.

You need to find something you can both live with. My friend married a Russian and they used Russian names that were accessible to Americans for their three daughters
Anastasia
Daria
Katarina
Maybe you’d like these names better and he’d still like them since they’re Russian? I’m sure there are many others that would fit into this category. Why don’t you research and see if you can find some alternate Russian names that you like? That way he will see that you are respecting his heritage and maybe be more willing to compromise.

You can use Luca, but maybe consider using Luka, which is the Russian spelling.
The names Tatiana, Lidiya, and Nadia are Russian, but also used in other languages. (The spelling Lidiya is very Russian-looking though). Oksana and Maksim sound even more Russian Tatiana, Lidiya, and Nadia. However, Oksana and Maksim are phonetic, and very easy to pronounce. (I think Oksana and Maksim are great names.)
There are a number of names that will work well in Russian and in English.
Anastasia ("resurrection"; By the way, this is my favorite name for a girl, and I don’t have any Russian blood in me.)
Maria/Mariya
Anna ("grace, favor")
Vera ("faith")
Irina ("peace")
Elena - form of Helen
Larisa
Liliya
Margarita
Veronika
Sofya/Sofiya
Tamara
Valentina
Yulia
Alexander
Ivan
Andrei
Victor/Viktor
Eduard
Isaak
Luka
Sevastian
Hope this helps!

Also, if you compromise and do use Russian first names, then YOU should be able to pick the middle names according to American customs. Maybe use names from your family. It’s not fair for your husband to choose/give both the first and middle name. You have to compromise; he doesn’t get to have a Russian first name AND the patronymic middle name. It’s either one or the other.
