Sean vs. Shawn vs. Shaun

How should I spell this name? I recognize "Sean" is probably the original spelling, but would it be silly to use that spelling if I’m not Irish at all? Are there any other traditional spellings for it?

I prefer Shaun but I don’t think it would be silly to use Sean, even if you’re not Irish.

Sean is the nicest spelling and it doesn’t matter if you’re not Irish! :)

I all the spelling but Shawn is my favorite, but Sean is the traditional.

Sean, definitely. I used to like Shawn but now I really like the original spelling.

That’s silly. People hardly look at the origin of names that they really like. For example: Benjamin is Hebrew and certainly people don’t hold back from using it if they are not Hebrew.

Sean is mainstream enough that you don’t have to be Irish to use it. I would stick with the Sean spelling. The others look kind of "dumbed down" and more dated.

Sean looks the most masculine, and I like traditional spellings myself. Shawn is the feminine spelling. Origin doesn’t matter. I have chosen a combination of names for my daughter, and they’re both Greek. But I am not Greek at all, I just like the name. Go with Sean.

I think Sean is definetly the most classy and it doesn’t matter what origin you are, It’s more traditional and handsome.

I think the spelling and pronouncing should be based off your nation's official language. Sean and Jean are Frech while Shawn/Shawn and John are English.

Shawn is the best spelling. Sean doesn't even make sense. How is that even pronounced the same as Shawn? It looks like see-ann.

There is a news caster here in phoenix whose name is Sean but he pronounces it 'Seen' to avoid confusion with his brother, Shawn. Thanks mom!

Shawn is that guy down the street who sells baby aspirin to high schoolers. Sean is the man you go to when your significant other is kidnapped and you need a highly trainer special forces soldier to safely rescue them. (the gunman, Sean Penn?) anyways Shawn/Shaun are imposters. Sean is the only way to spell it. 'Nuff said. /drop mic

I always thought that Sean was the Irish way to spell the name, Shaun the English and Shawn American.

There are a lot of postings preferring Shawn. However, here are these individuals located e.g. UK, Europe, America.

I spell my name Shaun and come from the UK (England)

By the people here's logic... John should be pronounce JO-HON, Louis should be pronounced LOU-UUS and Seamus should be pronounced SEA-MOOS, simply because of their spelling. I am assuming they are the product of the ghastly US education system.
Few words in English are pronounced exactly how they are spelt (look at the differences in writing then in speech for the words "though" and "thought"; similar spelling, very different pronounceation).
