JOLE vs. JO-EL vs. other

How do you pronounce the name Joel? We pronounce it JOLE, but there is a little boy in our daughter’s class with the name and it is pronounced JO-EL. Do you think it will be mispronounced a lot? We have the name Joel Cohen picked out for our fourth child. His sister and brothers are Karly, Noah, and Liam.

Not sure where you live, but I’ve met Europeans who pronounce it with two syllables, while all the American Joels I’ve met have pronounced it with one. I really don’t think Joel Cohen sounds good though; the double long O sound is too harsh. If it’s a middle name, I’d use another.

I pronounce Joel like Cole with a J. Joel Cohen is a nice name, congrats!

Two syllables, definitely. I say it more like JO-ehl. I think Jole sounds really abrupt and harsh. I’m in the US, by the way, and the one Joel I know here pronounces his name as I do.

Jo-el sounds too much like Superman. Kal-El, Jo-el, eh, I prefer the one syllable pronunciation.

There’s a guy named Joel in my class and he pronounces it like Jole. I like it pronounced that way better.

Either way, but with the name Noel, for a boy it is pronounced Nole, for a girl, No-ell.

I’ve only ever heard it rhyming with Cole (I’m from Minnesota if that helps). The other pronunciation sounds like it’s feminine and spelled Joelle. Like Noelle.

I’ve never heard it pronounced Jo-el except for the girl version, Joelle. All the Joel’s I know say it Jole.

I know someone who pronounces it like Joelle, but everyone calls him Joel. Tis quite sad.

I would say it like Jole, and 99% of the time people will say it that way. The only people I know that say it Jo-elle are hispanic, so it must be a spanish thing. I don’t like Joel, but I think you’ll be fine with the pronunciation.

Jo-el is probably a Hebrew name as it comes from the Bible like Samuel, Michael, Ezekiel, Raphael, Israel, etc. In Paleo-Hebrew those names are said with -el. El means God. Elohim is God.
