Leah vs. Pronounced LAY-UH?

Ok. So I really love the name Leah (Lay-uh) for a girl but have been told that Leah is usually pronounced Lee-uh. Is this spelling a problem if I want her name pronounced Lay-uh. I would love any spelling suggestions that you think would get pronounced Lay-uh. Thanks!

Agree with Poster 1. Leah is not the spelling you want although I prefer Leah over Leia as a name in itself.

I know the name Leia is pronounced the way you want but it is also a famous character from star wars if you don’t mind the association.

Could also maybe spell it Laya/Layah if you don’t want to use Leia

Leia, like the character. I knew a lee-uh with this spelling, however, her name was always mispronounced Lay-uh.

My daughter is Leila pronounced lay-luh so I would assume Leia would be pronounced lay-uh if that’s what you were looking for.

My name is Lea. I pronounce it as Lay-uh but most people say Lee-uh. If you want her name to be pronounced Lay-uh go with the the spelling Leia. Most likely people won’t confuse the pronunciation.

Honestly I think Layah would be fab if you want her to end up a girly or edgy person

Leah can be pronounced either - in Hebrew it is Lay-uh in English Lee-ah, so both are correct and I do know people named Leah who pronounce it both ways however it will be easier for her if you spell it Leia as there will be a lot less of having to correct people. GL!

As far as I know, Leah is lee-uh and Leia/Lea are lay-uh. Léa, the French form of Leah, is also lay-uh because the accent aigu above an E makes the "ay" sound.

USAGE: English, Hebrew, Biblical, Biblical Hebrew
OTHER SCRIPTS: לֵאָה (Hebrew)
PRONOUNCED: LEE-ə (English)
Meaning & History
From the Hebrew name לֵאָה (Le’ah) which was probably derived from the Hebrew word לְאָה (le’ah) meaning "weary". Alternatively it might derive from a Chaldean name meaning "mistress" or "ruler" in Akkadian. In the Old Testament, Leah is the first wife of Jacob and the mother of seven of his children. Although this name was used by Jews in the Middle Ages, it was not typical as an English Christian name until after the Protestant Reformation, being common among the Puritans.

Hopping on many years later to say, my daughter is 11. She is a Leah pronounced LAY-ah. There has never been any issue once corrected. But yes most people will read the name Leah and assume it is LEE-ah. Wondering if you went with it all these years later or will ever even see this.
