Isn’t it bri-say-iss or bree-say-iss?

I love the Illiad, but I think that the name has teasing potential since it’s pronounced Breezy.

no, remember just like paris is pronounced par-is in america, in france, where it comes from, it is par-ee. my family is from greece, the pronunciation is bree-sie, there is also Briseia (bree-sie-a) which we like too. but thank you for the prospective!

I think it depends on where you live. If you live in the USA, I personally wouldn’t use that name because it’ll get butchered constantly. Yes, it’s a pretty name, but nobody will be able to pronounce it or spell it. Your poor daughter will be sentenced to a life full of headaches, spelling, re-spelling, pronouncing, re-pronouncing, correcting, answering questions, etc. If you really are in love with the name, consider using it as a middle name.

she will be home schooled along with our other children so bullying is not really an issue. and all the extra-cirricular activities are typically in groups where we know most if not all the families through home scooling. most of the kids have uncommon names for this country. my bigger concern is professionally when she is grown. i’ve heard the name can influence job opitions, does anyone know anything on this, and if so how does this name look?

Poster 4 makes a good point. Every time she meets someone new (regardless of her age), she’ll have to spell her name and repeat it. I suppose she could use the nickname Bri if her name is too complicated. I think, though, if she’s looking for a job and if it comes down between Briseis and someone named (for example) Catherine, Catherine is going to be the first one to get the call. The person isn’t going to want to embarrass themselves by messing up the name.

I just looked it up and the only pronunciation I see is Bree - say - ee - s. I kind of like it, I like the literary association and I don’t much mind if a name I truly love has to be spelled out for people. Even seemingly straightforward names get butchered all the time. May as well be a name you love. I just can’t find anything to support the breezy pronunciation.
