Marcia or vs. Marsha ?

I want to use the name Marcia in honor of my grandfather Marc. I know that it’s "dated" but I don’t mind that because every name is going to be dated, old fashioned, or trendy, or whatever! The Brady Bunch thing doesn’t bother me either. So other than those things, could you please give me you opinion on the name and which spelling you like best. Thanks!

I prefer Marcia, but that’s because I would pronounce that one Mar-see-ah, instead of Marsh-ah

What about Marcela?

Mar-see-ah is pretter than Marsha

My grandma’s name is Marsha, I asked her about her name and she said she was too old for the brady bunch thing, and I think your daughter will be too young. I think either way you go it will be misspelled but I like Marsha better because Marcia could be pronounced like (Mar-see-uh)

Oh is Marica supposed to be pronounced Marsha?

I don’t love either name. I think Marcela or Marcy would be much nicer.

Marcia doesn’t look like it’d be pronounced like Marsha. I know you say you don’t care if the name is dated but do you not care because you really like the name or it’s because you just want to honor your grandfather? Personally, I don’t like the name. I don’t find it attractive or feminine, at all. It just reminds me of marshes and makes me think that someone wanted a feminine "nature" name and made Marsha up.

I much prefer Marcella or Marcene. Or Marsha as a middle name.

Marcella is a great way to honor him! I really don’t like Marsha or Marcia, unless it’s pronounced MAR-SEE-UH. Go with Marcella! I have a friend with this name and she goes by Marci, or Ella.

Hey everyone. Thanks for all the suggestions, but I really don’t care for any of them. Marci is ok, but I like Marcia better. I don’t like Marcella or Marcene at all, sorry. Oh, and I don’t care about it being dated, because I like the name, not just because it honors my grandfather.

The name Marsha is beautiful and will never be mispronounced. Marcia will be correcting people all her life.

I know Marsha was in use in the late 1800’s & early 1900’s, but the original spelling was Marcia and Marsha sounds like, well, a marsh. Nice for the wildlife, but not for a name.

I love Marcia AND Marsha! But I prefer Marcia. Has more history behind it. I think it is nice that she would have a choice of 2 ways to pronounce it. I think more people today prefer to hear Mar-see-uh.
But Marsha is cool too. The name may be dated, but I bet it will come back. You are very wise not to be too influenced by that.

Well I know I am late on my opinion, but my name is Marcia. I have spent over 50 years correcting people on how to pronounce Marcia (Marsha). I have had people argue with me that it is not a correct pronunciation and always I would say it is the same as with Patricia. It has been a pain all my life. I hate being called Mar c ah but I have grown fond of Marci. Who likes their name anyway?

My name is Marcia and it is pronounced MAR-see-uh. I like my name. It was never common when I was growing up and I have had many compliments about it.I think it sounds much softer than "Marsha"

My name is Marsha. I spell it Marcia. I don’t mind if people pronounce it either way. I like the name. My mother gave it to me. :-)

I am finding this post amusing, and I know I am late adding to the comments. I am Marcia (Mar see ah) and have spent 35 years correcting people of how to pronounce it, as I always get called Marsha. Guess it will be an issue no matter what your name is, if it is spelled Marcia get ready to have people pronounce it wrong. LOL

My name is Marcia, as a child it wasn't my favorite sounding name because I was called Marshal by some smart alec kids, and my grandfather who pronounced everyone's name incorrectly.

I have had this name 67yrs given to me by my grandmother, I love it now, thanks grandmama.

The name Marcia is always a good conversation starter, as someone always has their spin on it depending on their origin. I don't care how it is pronounced or spelled I would say to them as long as I can cash my paycheck. I know my name!!!

My name is Marcia, is in their with some big hitters news caster Marcia Cramer, actress Marcia Mason. Marcia, Marcia, Marcia not bad good enough to spark this conversation, even after 67yrs.

My name is Marsha. I like this spelling because it's spelled and pronounced the same. I never liked my name because there are no nicknames. I don't dislike the name, but there's nothing special about it. I'm named after my grandfather and my mother wanted a name that couldn't be made fun of. I gave my own children names that would have easy nicknames so they would have a couple of options in their lives.

The Brady Bunch Marcia reference is a positive one. She's the pretty, successful daughter in the family. I don't mind hearing Marsha, Marsha, Marsha from people.

She was Marsha Brady not Marcia Brady. I am a Mar cee uh. I do not want to be called Marsha. Get it right.

Look it up Marcia Brady was spelled Marcia. This is from English origin and we all know how it was pronounced on the Brady Bunch. My wife Marcia was good with it but in the last 10 years more people that are reading it are using the Spanish origin pronounce Mar cee uh. It really starting bother her being Mar cee uh she is not Spanish. But the United States makeup is always changing the Spanish language is becoming more and more prevalent here.

I am a Marcia (Marsha)and, like the others say, I have been correcting people as to my pronunciation of it. In fact, sometimes, like at a nail salon, I sign in as Marsha to avoid hearing it mispronounced. Of the two, Marcia looks prettier and does not bring swampland to mind. I, too, tell people that it is pronounced like Patricia at the end -- that usually does the trick.

I was named Marcia in 1952 - pronounced Marr suh. Not Marsha which was the spelling that was common in the 50s or Marcia pronounced Marr see uh although one aunt called me that or Mar see. My nickname is Marty after th Mickey Mouse Club series of Spin and Marty.
