Finley vs. Finlay
I think we’ve finally decided on a name for our baby boy, but I’m now wondering about the spelling. My husband prefers Finlay, and I don’t mind either way. But the name will be pronounced Fin-LEE. Will spelling it Finlay cause people to pronounce it Fin-LAY? Is Finlay (pronounced Fin-LAY) even a name? Thank you!

I don’t think you will have issues with the enunciation of "ley" vs "lay". I think the majority of the time people will pronounce it with the "lee" sound. You may come across some with different accents or background that may pronounce it "lay" but just correct them to your preference. Good luck!

Many Scottish names ending in "-ay" are pronounced with an "ee" sound: Ramsay, Lindsay, Finlay, Barclay, etc. I prefer to keep spellings authentic, as long as they aren’t too user-unfriendly. I doubt many would think of Finlay as "FIN-lay" and if they do, one correction should do the trick. Finlay gets my vote.

when I see Finlay I pronounce it like Finley. So I don’t think it would be a problem.
