Kiera vs. Keira vs. Which spelling?
We love the Irish name Ciara (pronounced keer-uh), but we are trying to figure out which spelling is best for living in the U.S. (Ciara spelling is out). I saw that Kiera is more of the spelling that’s the closest to traditional Irish, with Keira being more of the Americanized version (and more well known with Keira Knightley). They’re both pronounced the same, but which spelling do you think is best? Thanks!

I live in the U.S. and every girl I have known with this name has spelt it as Kira. I agree that Kiera looks as if it would be kee-AIR-a, and most people know Keira Knightley, but even still I’m drawn to say Kay-ra. I’d go with Kira for the pronunciation you want.

I know a girl who spells it Ciara, and yes most people think it is pronounced Sierra, but it is so much prettier than Kiera or Keira. GL

We had that same problem. We ended up going with Kira because DH worked with a girl who pronounced her name Kee Air uh (Kiera). I saw a girl at a fast food restaurant with the name KEIRA on her nametag. When I asked her if her name was Keer uh, she told me it was pronounced Ky ruh. I’d spell it how you want to spell it. If it isn’t pronounced correctly, just correct them with the correct pronunciation.

In the Lion King movies, Simba’s daughter is name Kiara, pronounced Kee-AIR-ah. That’s one of the reasons people tend to pronounce Kiera as Kee-AIR-ah.
Kira would be your best bet it you want it said Keer-ah.

Kiera is actually the correct way of spelling the name. Keira Knightly's father picked out her name. Her mother spelled it incorrectly on her birth certificate.

^ Jennifer I didn't know that. Keira looks so strange to me. Of the anglicized versions, I think Kiera is by far the better. I'm not sure why people have such difficulty pronouncing it...last names like Kiernan or Tierney and words like pierce, believe, fierce, piece all have the "ie" vowel sequence pronounced like a long "e". Words with "ei" mostly pronounce it "ay" like weight, veil, sleigh (exception is "weird" but that's the only one I can think of offhand). I do like Ciara best, but I understand that's going to be a lifetime of correcting people's pronunciation in the US!

My name is keira - has been pronounced kee-rah or kee-air-rah or k-eye-ra or kee-ah-rah. But mainly everyone says it right ( k- ear- rah) I live in the uk tho and people always spell my name incorrectly and assume it's kiera.I'm not really bothered tho it doesn't have a big impact. Keira is the traditional irish way to spell it i think so

Plus, if I was just looking at the name, I’d pronounce Kiera as Key-aira. Keira looks much more like Keer-ah. Though Kira looks more like Keer-ah than either of those imo.
