I assume it sounds like table and cable. I like that it’s uncommon but not crazy. I’m not sure what gender though, possibly both!

Looks like a girls name to me.

I think it works on either gender.

There’s a female professional wrestler named Sable, but I see it more for a guy.

sable is the correct spelling of the word, as a common noun it has no gender, and like River, another common noun, it can be used on either sex

I’d say Sable is more masculine and Sabel is more feminine. But, honestly, the name sounds a bit ridiculous (sorry).

Well Sybil is unisex and Mabel is female. I think Sabel or Sable is definitely unisex.

Neither.

Sybil is most definitely NOT unisex, and irrelevant in any case.
A sable is from the word meaning "black", derived from the name of the black-furred mammal native to Northern Asia, ultimately of Slavic origin. So gender neutral.

She didn’t ask your opinion of the name itself, and no, you’re not sorry, you’re rude. I’m getting sick of cyber punks having zero common courtesy! Every poll has one. Go away and take your rain cloud with you. Thanks, that’d be great.

Poster 1- yes that is the way I will be pronouncing it.

Poster 9- I know 2 Sybils. One an old lady and 1 a young man. In this age, Sybil is unisex.

Poster 10- Its really ok! Lol! The rain clouds don’t bother me. I expect flack for an uncommon name, although I do appreciate your humor ;)

Omg I have a female pitbull named Sable! I love how punkish it sounds. Doesn’t mean you cant use it on a person, but if you do, I’d keep it female.
GL!

i agree that sable looks like the masculine form and sabel looks feminine

No name is ’unisex’ just on some random person’s say so. It all about history and meaning. Sable is not a name, however, and so if you use it as one it could apply equally to either gender.

Def unisex, and spell it sable
posted by guest :: 9 years ago | report
Sabelle would be female.

I know an old black woman named Sable and she tells people her mom got her name out of one of the very first books she learned to read as an adult. I don’t know her age but she’s very old.

Sounds like a beautiful girl’s name to me. I don’t have an opinion on the spelling though.

Sabelle is Say-belle and not Say-bull, IMHO. I choose Sabel anyway.

Oh I just love it!!! It is a wonderful fresh cut from all the recent trends. This has got to be one of the worst generations for naming a child, but Sable will stand out in a crowd in a good way! I see it exclusively for a girl. It’s beautiful!!

I like it honestly. I feel it’s unisex too.

Gorgeous! I haven’t heard this name in years! Definitely not for a male, with either spelling.

I don’t know if ethnicity associations will be a concern of yours, but Sable actually had a little time in the spotlight amoung African American females about 2 generations ago. It was mostly seen as an "old country southern black women with hospitality who knows how to cook" type of name. It’s isn’t common at all in this age, but it has certainly been an established name in the past.

I love all this feedback. Thanks y’all!

Behindthename.com
Nameberry.com
Babynamewizard.com

All 3 websites list Sable as a female name, 2 of them list it with its origin being of dark/black ethnicity. They also list a few known Sables throughout history. It is most definitely a name.

Thanks a bunch! My husband said the same thing, that it was most certainly a name and that those who said otherwise haven’t paid attention. Either way, its the name of our child, therefore ITS A NAME! :D We’ll work on middle names soon!
