I am super confused by this name too. It drives me crazy. My niece’s name is Madeleine they pronounce it just like Madelyn. Madeline I always thought was pronounced Mad-a-line. I like that pronunciation better. Now I am hearing it can be pronounced Madalyn too...how annoying. I feel sorry for girls named Madelyn no matter how you spell it! Name her Jane!!

Mad-uh-line I guess was made up as the pronunciation of Madeline due to the cartoons. It’s supposed to be mad-uh-lyn. I wanted to know how people are likely to pronounce it on first glance.

Actually the original French pronunciation was Mad-uh-len. So even though the spelling Madeline is phonically Mad-uh-line in English, it’s said Mad-uh-len or Mad-uh-lyn because it started out as a French name. The pronunciation Mad-uh-line mostly came about with people who hadn’t actually heard the name before or from the children’s book "Madeline" because the could get better rhymes from the -line pronunciation.

It’s not a matter of opinion, Madeline IS pronounced Mad-uh-line!! That is the proper and only pronunciation. For Mad-uh-lyn, it would be spelled Madalyn/Madelyn/Madolyn.

Absolutely Mad-uh-line, no question. I also much prefer Madeline to Madelyn. Love this name... My very favorite is the French Madeleine though (Mad-uh-leen) which is stunningly beautiful and so very soft and feminine. I still really love Madeline though!

If anyone spells the name Madeleine and pronounces it Madalyn or pronounces Madeline Madalyn, they need to learn how to spell. I really wish people would look up the proper way to spell and pronounce names before naming their children. You’d think they’d put more thought into it.
Not referring to you op, but the situation the first poster commented on.
It’s really simple:
line = line
lyn = lyn
leine = leen
There’s also another French spelling, Madelaine which is pronounced lane.

Lol, the people who actually study names would have to disagree. Here’s what the most respected etymology website says about it.

Also, be aware that someone may be voting up the pronunciation they prefer. Generally when a poll gets far more votes than the average for the page it’s on, that’s what’s happening.

Every Madeline I know says it with the -lyn ending. And it’s popular on children in my area. I didn’t even know people said it -line until I’ve been reading baby name sites.

Poster above me, I am the first poster and you nailed this!! This is exactly how I see the names with 3 different endings. Thank you for clarifying. I am going to pronounce my nieces name correctly from now on whether her parents like it or not. =)

Perhaps you should do more research than just listening to a random poster before you start going against the wishes of your niece’s parents. Go to any baby name board and ask the regular which are the most accurate sites for baby name info. The majority will agree on a couple of sites. Go to those sites and check out the pronunciation guides.
I do agree with the poster who said that it would be best if people looked up the proper way to pronounce and spell their children’s names. Getting ideas here is one thing, but it’s best to research it in more depth elsewhere.

Definitely Mad-uh-line. That’s my best friend’s name and she spells it Madeline.
My daughter is Madeline and we pronounce it as Mad-uh-line. Just like Caroline vs. Carolyn. Always wonder why most people look at the name Caroline and pronounce it correctly but can't do the same for Madeline.
