Cyra vs. Ayla

My wife and I are deciding on the name for our second daughter. Her current favorite is Cyra (pronounced ’sigh-ruh’) and I like it but do not love it. I am wondering if she might like Ayla (pronounced ’eye-luh’). We wanted a short name with a Persian or Arabic origin and Cyra is the feminime form of Cyrus, the ancient Persian king. It have read that Cyrus may mean sun and thus Cyra may mean moon. Ayla is a Turkish name that means halo of moonlight. I like it because our first daughter has a Turkish name that means radiant like sunlight and starts with a Z. The downside to Ayla is that most people will probably pronounce the first syllable like the word "hay".

My vote is Cyra. I really like the name Ayla, but I’ve heard it pronounced both eye-luh and ay-luh.

If you live in the US, yes, a lot of people will pronounce Ayla like (h)Ay-lah, not eye-lah. Cyra is unique, and very, very pretty, but if you don’t love it, you should keep looking. What about:

Darya (ocean, river, sea)
Esther (star)
Nasreen (wild rose)
Shireen (sweet)

Good luck!

My wife is tired of me bringing the name issue back up (only a month left!) so I want to be sure. I do like Cyra very much so in the end we’ll likely go with that. I’ve perused the lists many times and very few names meet all of our criteria. Thanks for your comments!!

I like Ayla better and my friend is married to a man from Turkey, so I’m familiar with the pronunciation.

My name is Ayla but I pronounce it ay-lah not eye-luh or even hay-luh. Im not sure how to prn Cyra (ky-rah or Keira?

Cyra is pronounced "sigh-ruh" as I say in the poll summary. In parts of Britain the C might be pronounced as a K, but in American English, all "cy" words use a soft c; e.g., cyan, cyber, cylinder, Cynthia, cycle, cypress.

There is another name spelled Isla, pronounced the same as Ayla. I don’t know if the different spelling changes the meaning, or means that it isn’t Turkish. I also don’t know if the pronunciation is any less confusing. But perhaps the rising popularity of Isla might help people feel more at home saying Ayla. I also think Cyra is nice.

I don’t think my wife would go for Isla. And I liked that one daughter’s name would start with Z and the other with A. And I think you lose the meaning related to the moon, which is nice because it compliments the other’s meaning related to sun. Thanks for the suggestion!

I have always liked the name Ila, and this is the spelling I prefer. I peaked in 1903 at #237 and that year was equally as popular as the name Jeannette. Go retro ... Ila is a sweet name ... :o)

My wife is Indian and has a relative named Ila, but it is pronounced "EE-Luh", with a long E sound. I also don’t like that the capital I looks like the lower case l in san serif scripts.
