is Rine vs. a good nickname vs. for Katherine
I have an 8 year old daughter, Katherine. She came home from school the other day, upset that her two best friends had nicknames, but she didn’t (her friends are Annabelle, Annie and Samantha Sam) She doesn’t like Katie, because apparently there’s already a Katie Kaitlyn in her class and Kathy, and I quote, "sounds like an old grandma" were trying to think of some others, could Rine (like in with an r) work?

Rine could work I guess. It sounds good when said aloud it just looks a bit funny in writing because it looks like it would be said with a long I as if it rhymed with mine, fine, pine etc.Maybe Rin would look better.
Of course there’s also simply Kate but if the other girl is Katie she probably wouldn’t want that and there’s also Erin although it’s a name in it’s own right I’ve heard of people using it-makes sense I guess-kathERINe

I would read Rine as being pronounced with a long I sound. It’s really hard to suddenly and arbitrarily assign a nickname after 8 years of everyone calling her Katherine. Nicknames usually occur more naturally, if at all. So don’t be surprised if it just does not catch on.

Rine will always be pronounced as RY-ne. I wouldn’t use it. Maybe if you spell it Ryn or Rynn? That way you get the same sound as it is in Katherine. It’s not hard to start a nickname even after 8 years of her being called by her full name. My name is Michelle, my family started calling me Shelly when I turned 9 and that’s what I’ve been called my whole life since and I’m 26. It’s not that hard for it to catch on.

I love Rin. I grew up with a German shepherd named rin after rin tin tin and his nickname was Rinny which I think would be very precious on a lil girl. I also think Kat is cute. Good luck!
