Gryphon vs. Gryffin vs. Griffin

Or any alternate spelling?! My husband unfortunately signed his legal name as "Griffen" and we have launched an... arugment... about how we will spell it from here-on out. Delete if not allowed, as our son is already born and named. This is very important to us. He may end up using his middle name... Peter.

Griffin is the spelling I’ve always seen, it’ll make his life easier to use the traditional spelling. It’ll orecent him from endlessly correcting people.

I think they’re all four okay, honestly, but Griffin would be my pick, I guess. I think he should use his first name, though, not Peter.

Oh my. Well, Griffin Peter is wonderful. I don’t care for the other spellings, including Griffen. But there are other issues at play.

Does your husband now want to keep the spelling as is because that’s his true preference, or because he doesn’t think the hassle of legally changing it is worth a vowel?

And that’s what’s really bothering me. The legal repercussions. It’s probably worth it (if you both agree on another spelling) since he’s so young and doesn’t have much of a trail, other than his hospital birth records and a social security number (if in the U.S.). That last one is important. You don’t want the Department of Homeland Security getting confused and messing with future issues like passports, etc. I’m probably borrowing trouble. It’s the lawyer in me. That’s it! Consult a lawyer and see how difficult it would be. If not difficult, then definitely change it, assuming you both agree on a spelling.

If it makes you feel any better, my father wrote my sister’s name on the birth certificate without consulting my mother. She wasn’t expected to live and he didn’t want to upset her any more than he had to so he chose one of the names they had been tossing around. She’s fine now, but wonders what her name would have been if my mother had had more of a say. Good luck! :0)

He should use it the way it is on his social security card, if you live in the States. It leads to massive headaches with the government if he doesn’t. He will always have to provide additional proof of his identity, I speak from experience from my dad having to do this.

We are Canadian. We aren’t legally changing it... but the spelling "Griffen" is horrid. He hates it... and thought it was how I wanted it spelled. I had a very rough labor and was passed out for seven hours post-birth. :-(

In Canada, the name change is not an issue. I am a "Malaya" and have always gone by "Maya" (I couldn’t pronounce my own name when I was younger). Every legal document I sign is by "Maya Christina McDermott" and I have never had issues, thankfully!

At least Griffin is received well! God, I cannot stand seeing his BC and we framed it in the nursery! Lol. (Not his personal ID one, of course).

Of course, that’s now a "Maya Christina McKormac" EVEN on my marriage certificate! Lol!

Why not change it to Griffin? It can’t be that difficult, especially since you think the spelling is horrid. Your child might too and it’s him that it will effect the most. Changing it now will be easier than when he’s older and wants to do it himself.

yeah change it I’m in Canada - its really just a form you send in (at least in Ontario) I’m sure other provinces are about the same. I work in family law and parents legally change their children’s names all the time. Griffin is much nicer! Change it now and he won’t ever have pro blems in the future :) And congratulations on a beautiful baby!

file:///C:/Users/Lenovo/Downloads/11156E.pdf --> This is the form in Ontario. It is super simple. Good luck!
