It’s actually not the same though. It’s Vee-oh-lette, and it’s French. If it want the English pronunciation, use the English spelling. :)

I say:
Violet:vie-oh-let
Violette: vee-oh-let
I’m not really sure why I say them differently, I just do.

I would definitely pronounce it vee-oh-let...sorry but I’ve taken years of French classes and spent time in France and other francophone countries and that’s just how the name is pronounced. It’s not a matter of a different spelling of the same name, like Sarah or Sara, it’s just a different name. If you want vie-let, I’d just spell it Violet.

So should we pronounce scarlet, Scarlett and Charlotte differently then?? I know it’s French. But I don’t see how it couldn’t be pronounced the same?

I know a little girl named Violette and they pronounce her name exactly the same as Violet. I believe it is a family name in their case. I have been to many school functions and various birthday parties with this little girl and I’ve never heard anyone mispronounce her name. If you prefer the spelling Violette than I would use it. It’s YOUR daughter and it’s a beautiful name.

I don’t understand. Scarlet and Scarlett ARE pronounced differently than Charlotte. The point is that Violette is French and pronounced one way because it is a different word/name than Violet, which is English and pronounced a different way. Spelling isn’t the issue here, language is.

I pronounce it as vie-oh-let, just as I do with names such as Nicolette. If you want it pronounced as Violet, then spell it Violet because if you couldn’t tell by this comment section, it would be "mis"pronounced all the time

No Scarlett and Charlotte are pronounced the same at the end. Just spelled differently I think that’s what she means. I like Violette and I’d say it just like violet

I’m not understanding your comparison to Scarlet/t and Charlotte, it has nothing to do with Violet and Violette and isn’t adding anything to your argument. Violette is a French variation of Violet, that’s varying, meaning not the same. The difference is more comparable to John vs. Jean or Juliet vs. Juliette.

No matter what you name your child people will pronounce it wrong. My name is carmen and people always called me camren. If that’s the name you love go for it. It’s your baby

I think we all get what you are saying, but you are not understanding that it’s not the spelling that makes the difference, it’s the language. As someone above said Violette is a variation of Violet, they are not the same name, and THAT is the difference not the spelling.

Violette is not the same name as Violet. Violette is pronounced vee-oh-LEHT while the other is commonly pronounced VIE-lut or VI-oh-lut, depending on the region (southern Americans often say the second). They are in no way the same name with just a spelling variation. Violette is an entirely different name than Violet. If you want your child’s name to be said as VIE-lut, use Violet.

I get it people! Stfu! Stop repeating over and over. At least I’m not naming my little girl James or George. No need to comment on this poll. It was a huge waste of time!

Wow, you asked a question and we gave you answers, they are meant to help you make a decision. It is ultimately your choice which you pick obviously, but this gives you a good indication of what you and your daughter might hear if you use one or the other. A public poll is not the place to go if you just want people to agree with you.

Why was it a waste of time? Because not everyone said yes they are pronounced the same? If I got some off these comments on my polls I would be thrilled and very grateful for the help. These people took time out of their evening to answer your question to which you responded to in a very rude manner. Why ask a question if you will only accept one answer?

I love the spelling of violette but I want to pronounce it violet. for me I wouldn't mind if people pronounced her name wrong since I had the same problem growing up w the name Valeria. I would get Valerie and people spelling my name wrong, Basically butchering my name all my life. Anyway, I'm still going to use violette, I think the French and English pronunciation are both beautiful.

Violette and violet are the same name. It's the pronunciation that changes. In French, Violette is feminine. Violet is masculine. In French. It is pronounced ve oh let. No matter masculine or feminine. In other places. The pronunciation will very. Violette will most likely be pronounced like the French version. Violet will most likely be pronounced vi oh let. Unless it is said in French. My name is violet. I know this. People have also pronounced my name as. Vu o let. Or, vow let. But most cases. They pronouns it like the color. Vi oh let.
