Leah/Lea/Leia vs. Laya/Leya/Laia
Hello everyone. We are hoping that some of you can help us with spelling our daughters name. My husband is Israeli and I am French, however, we live in the USA (Albany, NY) and she will be an American citizen and probably live here for most of her childhood. We wish to give our daughter a name common to both our cultures, pronounce close to lay-ah but can’t decide how to spell in in America.
In France, we spell it Léa, but accents are not used here, and in Israel it is usually transliterated Leah, but both Leah and Lea seem to be pronounced exclusively as lee-ah. We’re unsure about Leia as we do not want to take an name that is important to us and our families and make it look like we only love Star Wars!
If any of you can help us with this dilema, we will be greatful! Which spelling do you think works the best or do you have another suggestion?

I would stick with one of the traditional spellings from one of your backgrounds. I actually know of a few Leas who pronounce their names "Lay-uh". Sure they have to correct people sometimes, but its a less popular spelling than Leah, which is more often pronounced "Lee-uh" so I think people are more inclined to question its pronunciation.

Laya is your best bet, however Leia is beautiful. Leah and Lea will definetly be pronounce Lee-ah in the US. But if you are okay telling people Léa is pronounced Lay-ah, then I would go with that since it’s the French spelling.

Lea will definitely be mispronounced. I like Leia, but I understand the star wars connection.
I actually know an Aleyah, pronounced Uh-Lay-ah, so Leyah would also make sense to me. I love the name

I’d say Leia. I don’t think the star wars reference is too important, and it would help with pronunciation.

My sister is Leah and pronounces it Lee-uh. However, I’d pronounce Lea like Leia, not Leah although maybe that is because I take French and both my parents speak some French. I do think Leia is pretty Star Wars, but the name itself is as well so when you say it out loud, you can’t hear the spelling. Leia is probably best because it’s the most straight forward, despite the Star Wars connection.

It’s a beautiful name! I think that Laia or Leia would be best for the pronunciation. My personal favorite is Laia.

The only Leas I know pronounce it lee. I think that Leia is going to work best pronunciation wise in the U.S. Leah is nearly always lee-ah so that one would be hard to get away with. The other three spellings will take explaining every time. When most people hear the name they will spell it Leia, yes most will know the name was used in Star Wars but I never assume a child has their name for a reason like that so not everyone will think that’s why you chose it. It’s a beautiful name.

I’d go for Leia. It might look a bit star wars-y to people outside the family, but what is important to you is that it would get said correctly, looks pretty and will translate well in both countries. Leia fits that category, so what if some people think of star wars? (besides, Leia in star wars is cool).
I would say Leah and Lea as Lee-ah. Also to me Laia looks like Ly-ah (like Kaia, Maia etc.)

I personally like Leia the best. Despite that people would think of Star wars by just saying it, (I do love star wars) i think Leia is the best. My friends call me Leia sometimes just for a nickname, even though my name is Leah. Sometimes, I wish that everyone would call me Leia. Leia is the best!
