Avalyn vs. Love it WHY vs. Hate it WHY

I have posted about this name before but didn’t get back as many responses as I would like. On the last poll some people said it was very pretty and others said it looks made up and the spelling looks immature. I want to spell it this way so it is pronounced correctly plus I think it looks nicer. I am just looking for lots of honest opinions here. The name is very similar to Evelyn which is a nice name so think of it that way. Avalyn instead of Evelyn.

It’s pretty but I wouldn’t know at first glance how to pronounce it. I’d guess Avvalyn like Madeline. So my vote is no.

You could go with Ava Lynn. Then it would be pronounce how you want and it doesn’t look so made up. You could still give her another middle name if you use Ava Lynn as a double barrel first name.

Pronounced ay-vuh-lynn.

I’m not sure what pronunciation you’re going for with this. What about Ava-Lynn or Ava Lynn if you want ay-vuh-lynn or maybe Avalon if you want a short A sound?

It’s OK. I neither love nor hate it.

Why cant I spell its Avalyn and pronounce it aye-vuh-lynn
posted by guest :: 8 years ago | report
All im doing is taking the name Ava and adding Lyn to the end. Its not complicated people. I do not want to hyphenate the name.
posted by guest :: 8 years ago | report
You can it just isn’t clear from the spelling. It just means you might have to correct people occasionally. Can I clarify... when you say aye do mean sounding like eye? Or ay rhyming with say.

Sorry we must have been typing at he same time.. I see now what pronunciation you want.

ay rhyming with say

I think the problem you’re having is, on this site, you’re getting comments from people from all over with a whole load of different dialects or languages (I’m from Scotland for example), and that will affect the pronunciation of a name, especially a less familiar one. You’re much less likely to have problems in your own area where most people will have similar accents. The name is not to my own taste, but there’s absolutely nothing wrong with it so I voted yes.

It’s definitely not the worst but I personally would spell it Avaline/Aveline, it just looks prettier and more established. Obviously it’s your choice but that’s my opinion

Yes, you are right about the different accents. That would explain a lot. I’m from Wisconsin.

Also I do like the Avaline spelling as well but then people might say ay-vuh-LINE like I drew a LINE on my paper.

Have you asked family/friends how they would pronounce Avalyn and Avaline? Then you can get an idea about which spelling gets the pronunciation right in your area.

I told a friend that I liked the name and I told her how I would spell it and she said that’s exactly how I would spell it too.

Here is another reason to love the name. Avalyn is a Old English girls name. The meaning of the name is "Beautiful Breath of Life". From Ava, meaning "Breath of Life" (Old English) and Lyn, meaning "Beautiful" (a variant of Linda, which has Spanish origin).

I really don’t think you will have that many problems with the pronunciation. I am in Georgia and I think most people would pronounce it the way you want it. With many many names nowadays people have to be told how to spell or pronounce a particular name, and it is rarely a traumatic experience! I rather like the name and if you love it, go for it!

Long before Ava become so common I went to school with a girl named Avalee and I always thought her name was so pretty so of course I love Avalyn too! I like how they put a new spin on the popular Ava.
I think the pronunciation is very straightforward.I don’t think you’ll have any trouble with it.

I like it but after reading the comments I realized I was mispronouncing it as A (as in apple)-vuh-lynn. I’m from California if that helps.

I have an Avalyn. People get the pronunciation right about half the time. But I don't really care. Honestly, use the name if you like it. Who cares what others think.

Hi. I have a 5 year old named Avalyn. We pronounce it differently from what I have read in your comment thread. The "A" is the short "A" sound as in apple. So it sounds like Evelyn but with two a's instead of two e's. We liked the names Ava and Evelyn while we were pregnant so we combined the two names and came up with Avalyn. At the time we didn't even know this name existed. People seem to like it, and most people pronounce it correctly.

I have a daughter with this name but I spelled it like this...Avahlyn. My grandmother's name is Aveline (a-va-leen), Ava was the only name my hubby and I could agree on, so I liked the fact that it was a combination of my grandmother's name and my mother's middle name (Lynn). I added the "h" in it to make it more unique. I knew there would be a lot of Avas in her class so I wanted to spell it a little different...Avah. Some may think it's weird, and I've had some interesting pronunciations of it... Especially robocalls from school or doctors offices lol... but I loved it and that's all that matters! Her little sister's name is Caleah pronounced ka-lee-yah and I've had some interesting pronunciations with that as well!

I have a avalyn.
We had a hard time with spelling to cause. Everyone wanted to say ava lyn ave lyn or ave a lyn
We dont pronounce the last a sound in ava its just av...the lyn
To try and dummy proof it we spelled it ayvlyn to tell people its long a sound without the extra short a .... People still get it wrong lol
Her name is ayvlyn grace 😍

I stumbled upon this looking to find meaning in a name I thought I made up Lol! I have a beautiful Avalyn. I was named after my grandmother-Angeline and loved the name Avery, so I put the two together, so she could have a part of Grandma and the name I loved. I wanted it original, and sure enough it's pronounced wrong often. Who cares? It's original and beautiful! I mostly call her 'Avie' for short ;)
