For a boy or girl?

I think the oldest spelling is Sibyl. I hazily recall it being spelled that way in my Greek mythology course in college. Good luck!

Well, according to behindthename.com, it comes from the Greek name Sibylla, which means "prophetess, sibyl." So I’m not sure which is more popular/common now, but I think that Sibyl was most likely the original spelling. Hope that helps!

Oh I voted for Cybil but the character in, The Picture of Dorian Grey, was named Sibyl Vane and that book was written in 1890. So I’m guessing that’s correct.

Now Sybil is the most popular, by far, so less chance of misspellings!

Sybil gets my vote. If memory serves, the Cybil spelling belongs uniquely to actress Cybil Shepherd. In her case, she was named for two male relatives, Cy and Bill. Cybil was simply a combination of those two names.

I’d use Cybil or Sibyl for a boy and Sibylla for a girl.
