In French, the accent would indicate that it should be pronounced So-Lehn. Without the accent it would be So-leen. Both names are absolutely gorgeous but so-lehn is stunningly beautiful and breathtaking! You can't go wrong either way though. Awesome name.

Beautiful name! Not trying to be rude, but anyone voting for so-leen is uneducated about an accent grave. It would be ridiculous to pronounce it leen and use an accent grave, it would be like using a d to make a b sound. I wish people would educate themselves about names before using them or just guessing their pronunciation.

Wow I am in love with this name now! First I've heard of it. Leen without accent, len with. I adore it either way.

It's definitely pronounced so-LEHN, not so-LEEN. The French language is great because it uses accents above certain vowels that tell you exactly how to pronounce the vowel! The accent grave above the letter E, like è, makes the sound "eh," not "ee." Accent aigu, é, makes the sound "ay," so if, hypothetically, it were spelt Soléne, it would be pronounced so-LAYN.

Thank you all for the amazing feedback! I myself pronounce it so-LEHN, because I'm Spanish and I know the "rules" of accents. I was worried that Americans would pronounce it so-LEEN, but I'm happy that a few know the difference. Makes me really happy. Thanks again! J.

Um. Hello Poster 5. I'm fluent in French. I'm very aware of what an accent grave does to the pronunciation of a word/name. I just happen to prefer the way so-leen sounds.

Definitely so-LEHN. I take French as well and understand the accent grave. Solene would be pronounced the other way.

Lol ok poster 9, but then spell it without the accent that literally creates the eh sound.

Stunning name! I prefer So-LEHN but would love So-LEEN too in any case, but I do know the accent makes it LEHN. Either way I wouldn't worry too much about people mispronouncing it. I have a very rare, very old Irish name (rare even to google, if you can believe it) and people have always mispronounced it upon first reading it (e.g. substitute teachers) and even though I was shy with new people, I never minded correcting them, it was never a big deal and would usually be followed up with a compliment to my name once I corrected them, if anything it made me feel special.

Oh I should note that I go by my mn on this site as I don't like using my fn cause I too easily pop up on social media due to its rare-ness. It just occurred to me that going by Sarah and talking about my Irish name might have seemed odd, haha. Best of luck and congrats! I'm sure she will too!

With the accent, Soh-LEHN. Without the accent, Soh-LEEN. I took French so I'm going based off that. I don't know if Americans who haven't studied French would know that or not.

The only issue is going to be if you give it to her and she is not "lean", she may be teased horrendously. Americans do not tend to pronounce names the same way.

Just found this. Named my daughter Solène in 2015. Just a little forewarning for those living around Spanish speakers. Hispanic people tend to pronounce it Sole-ne with the "e" sound on the end. A little frustrating when you chose it bc you loved the way "Soh-lehn" flows off the tongue.
