Adelyn nn (addie) vs. Whats wrong vs. With this spelling?

My husband and I are naming our baby girl Adelyn Sophia. I did a poll yesterday and some said the spelling wasnt good, I think they said it looked made up? I want it pronounced ad-uh-lyn, not ad-uh-line. If it were to be spelled Adeline, it would be pronounced different. WDYT? Thanks....

If you want the spelling (ad-uh-lyn), I would spell it Adalyn Sophia. I love the name you’ve chosen!

Yes, Adelyn looks misspelt and made-up. Adeline IS pronounced ’ad-uh-lin’ and so Adelyn is just a very bad misspelling of Adeline. If she’s going to be called by her nn most of the time anyway, then why not spell it right?

Adeline wouldn’t be mispronounced, if that’s what you’re afraid of. My sister’s name is Adeline (pronounced ad-uh-lin) and she almost never has to correct anyone. I mean, everyone’s name is mispronounced sometimes. My name’s Rachel and some people get that wrong, but 9/10 it’s right. So go with Adeline!

Well, I will try to keep her from being called Addie most of the time, I want her to be called Adelyn. I just put that in the poll to show what her nickname would be. Also, I am not sure Adeline and Adelyn are pronounced the same. Is that what everyone is saying here? What about add-uh-line? Thought that was Adeline. I am so confused!

I like spelling and I would say AD-UH-LYN I don’t see how the pronounciation would be different with an a...

I’ve only ever heard Adeline pronounced as Add-el-in. Never heard it as Add-el-ine. Though I guess if that’s the pronunciation you wanted then Adeline would be best. Adelyn just looks bad. I’d go with Adeline

as per the webiste Inogolo Adeline is pronounced either a-deh-LEEN
ah-deh-lain
ah-day-LEEN

You could spell it Adeleine, like Madeleine without the M. It looks better and would for sure get the same pronuciation as Adelyn.

Yes, Adeline and Adelyn have the same pronunciation.

Adele is also a cute name, only one spelling and pronounciation!

Madeleine is pronounced MAD-eh-luhn
or mahd-LEHN
not mad-uh-lyn....

I’m French and really hate seeing names like Madeleine being mispronounced all the time. There are webites like Inogolo where they teach you the correct pronounciation don’t give your child a foreign name if you can’t pronounce it...

Adeline, Adelyn, Madeleine, same general pronunciation (general meaning there’s an ’m’ in madeleine). Go with Adeline

If you want AD-el-in then Adeline is the way to go. If you want a-DEL-in then Adelyn.

the pronunciation of any name ending in ’line’ is regional. In most of the US it is pronounced ’lynn’, in the southern US it is pronounced ’line’ (like caroline) and in different european countries it is pronounced ’leen’ ’luhn’ ’line’ ’lynn’...no matter what, pronunciations will change depending upon where the person who is saying it is from, so just spell it properly and deal with it, if you pronounce it ad-uh-lyn, others around you will catch on, i would spell it Adeline.

I agree with Annie. It depends on where you live. I believe in most places Adeline would be pronounced ’ad-el-in’ or ’ad-el-en’ which is really close, so I think you should go with the original spelling.

I am not sure anyone on here knows the correct pronounciation. Also, I think there is nothing wrong with the spelling Adelyn. Go for it!

if you like the spelling Adelyn go for it.
Some people here call their kids Londyn or Coconut...I’m mean Adelyn seems pretty normal to me...

Before I chose the spelling Adelyn, I done alot of research on the internet. Everyone is confused then! Because majority of the people think that Adeline is add-uh-line. Nobody is for sure on it then.

The correct pronunciation of Adeline is ADD uh line or Add uh LEEN. Thinkbabynames.com I would spell it Adelyn if you want it pronounced correctly. There is nothing wrong with that spelling. It is a lovely name. GL!

To the last post, thank you! I was pretty sure that Thinkbabynames.com was a website I had looked the pronounciation up on.

I know an Adeline and her name is pronounced as it looks (add-uh-LINE)....so I see nothing wrong with Adelyn if you want it pronounced that way. I think it looks cute. People spell Madelyn like that, so what’s the difference? I would just do it.

Yes, people spell Madelyn like that and nobody says anything. What is the difference? There is no difference in my opinion.

OMG people! Poll Creator, Adelyn is beautiful and cannot be mispronounced. I am considering the name myself. I found it in a baby book and there it was pronounced "lyn"
I also personally know a Madelyn--no confusion, same as Adelyn. You can take any name from any originating country, botch it, recreate it, say it with a fake accent, give the name to your dog or even make up your own name. ADELYN is very pretty and it has my vote

You could go with Adelynn or Adalynn.

My daughters name is Adelyn and we pronounce it ADD-da-Lynn . We have never gotten a comment that we’ve spelled our daughters name wrong. I say do what you want and that’s it. We also nickname her Addy, can’t stand it when people miss spell it to Addie. Not a bad spelling just not how our daughter spells her name. So moral is there’s lots of ways to spell names, go with how you want to spell it and people will eventually learn.

I’m actually surprised by a lot of the comments. I’ve never heard of Adeline being pronounced as Adelyn. My g. grandma was Adeline, so we changed it a little and named our daughter Adelyn. We haven’t had any "issues" with the spelling, besides it being "popular" and there being SO many ways to spell it (double D, double N, etc. etc.)!
