Elena vs. Elaina vs. Other spelling
I have always sworn I would use traditional spellings of names since I have offbeat spelling of my name, but we have a baby cousin named Selena and even though its pronounced different I think Elena is too close. What do you think? Last time around, we had a family member name their son the same as our's just 3 months later and I would really like this little one to have her own name.

For the pronunciation of lay, I'd go with Elaina or Alaina

Definitely use Elaina for the pronunciation you want. I think Elaina would be the 'normal' spelling for el-ay-na. Elena I would pronounce as eh-len-uh.

I pronounce them differently and prefer Elena - E-leh-nuh. If you want E-lay-nuh I would definitely use the Elaina spelling. Good luck!

Elena is my favorite spelling but I do like Alaina as well and that one would be the most different from Selena.

I had a student once who spelled it Elaina. I think if your family is Spanish-speaking, they might expect Elena but to English speakers I don't think it makes a difference.

I have only ever heard of Elena being pronounced ee-LAY-nuh (and I know people personally with this name), and as that's the traditional spelling and pronunciation, I would stick with it. Elaina looks odd and it will be misspelled as Elena, I'm sure.
