Izla vs. Islah vs. Isla

Hello, my husband and I fell in love with the name Isla. But recently found out we have been pronouncing it incorrect..we say it IZ-LAH. How should we spell the name to reflect the name we both have come to adore?

I've met multiple people named Isla, and they all pronounce it EYE-luh (as in "island"), which is also how I pronounce it. So I wouldn't use the Isla spelling for IZ-luh.

Izla seems like the most straight-forward spelling to me!

That's too funny I initially thought it was pronounced the way you guys did too! I also the sound of izla more than its actual pronunciation. I would go with Izla. I think that wouldn't cause anyone to pronounce it the way you want it. Best wishes!!

I would keep looking. Isla is pronounced eye-la and if you spell it like that she is going to have constant pronunciation issues. Islah will be pronounced the same and also just looks strange. Izla would be your best bet however I think it looks and sounds made up. Here are some other names that have the same feel: Lyla, Lola, Myla, Mila, Ivy, Ruby, Hazel, Violet, Elsie, Luna and Maisie. You could also use Isabelle Lane for example and call her Izla. GL!

My niece is named Isla and she is always having to correct people..they don't know how to pronounce it and some call her Izlah..her Mom isn't too fond of it

Izlah--made up for sure but this will get the pronunciation you want. Isla is eye-luh, most people are familiarizing themselves with this name now. Leave Isla alone if you want izla.

I was also going to suggest Izlah, just so it's even more separated from Isla (EYE-la). At a quick glance, Izla looks an awful lot like Isla and with Isla's relative popularity (at least compared to Izla), I think some mistakes could be made. If you spell it Izlah, it's clearly a different name and I can't see any other way of pronouncing it besides IZ-lah that you want. Ending -ah is not uncommon for girl names, besides (Susannah, Norah, Rebekah, Aaliyah, Hannah, etc.)

Maybe call her Isabella with the nickname Isla?
