Raya vs. Reya vs. Rhea
So my daughter loves the movie Raya and the last dragon..I guess I never pay too much attention when it's on because I thought her name was pronounced RAY-UH which I really liked but now I realize it's RI-UH. So I was looking up different spellings and saw Reya but this is apparently pronounced REE-UH. I then remembered there is a greek goddess, Rhea that I always pronounced RAY-UH but upon looking it up it's also REE-UH. I really like it pronounced RAY-UH not the other two ways.. Out of these 3 spellings which one are you most likely to automatically pronounce it RAY-UH or if you know a different spelling that's cool too!! I think maybe depending on where you live names will always sound different..
The Top Baby Name is...
Raya
Reya
Rhea

I've never heard anyone pronounce Rhea as REE-ah. It's always been Rhea. But if you want to make extra certain, you can spell it the French way, with an accent on the e: Rhéa. (The é is pronounced "ay").

@Kit oh my gosh that's so true! I should have thought of that considering my middle name is Renée!

If you look at the original Greek, it's REH-ah, which sounds almost like RAY-ah. I think REE-ah is just an anglo way of saying a name they were unfamiliar with.

I would 100% pronounce Rhea as ree-uh. The other two two me say Ray-uh. (but I'm English so maybe that makes a difference?)

I love the soundof Reya! I would use this spelling...Rhea is beatiful on it's own, but the spelling is thesame as the ending of many illnesses and diseases, so I wouldn't use that spelling. The name is lovely!

I know a Rhea that pronounces it like Ree-uh. To me Raya looks like it should be pronounced the way you are looking to pronounce it. I know a young woman with this name and it's really pretty.

Raya is what will give you Ray-uh most of the time, though you will get some people who pronounce it like the movie character the first time they meet her - you will just have to correct them. If they haven't seen the movie (which will be 90+% of people) I think they will pronounce it phonetically like you want. I know a 3 year old Raya, who pronounces it like you like (and what I personally gravitate towards).
I had a co-worker Rhea who pronounced it like Ree-uh, and I've had other co-workers jokingly call her Rhea-Rhea-Diarrhea. I'd stay away from this spelling since it's literally the same as diar"rhea".
Reya I think you'll get more Ree-uhs than Ray-uhs. Hard when the E is right in there like Rhea.

My name is Raya and it's pronounced Ray-uh. I was shocked to see the movie pronounce my name as Rye-uh 🤷♀️ Either way, this movie has confused many people when I tell them my name 😭
