I went to school with a girl named Sunita. Soo-NEE-tuh. I think it’s Sanskrit. I think I’d use Sunny, though, rather than going into contortions to try to find a name with sun in it that you otherwise would never have thought of. Though I’d actually name her something like Mary Elizabeth and then just call her Sunny if she seemed like a sunshiny kind of person. Then if she seemed to be a brooding, pessimistic sort, she wouldn’t be stuck with an ironically jolly name.
Besides which, I always love it when someone has a nn like Skipper or Muffy and you don’t find out their name until you read it on their wedding invitation and think "Who is Mary Elizabeth St. Clair? Oh, that must be Sunny St. Clair! Ha, Mary Elizabeth...who knew?"

I went to high school with a girl named Sunny, not a nickname, her name was really Sunny. She loved it and everyone always told her how pretty and unique her name was. If you love it, go for it! I think it’s a great name!
