Unless both names are honoring family, I feel they are extremely outdated. If they are being used as honorary names, maybe try something like...

Helena May/Mae
Helena Marie

I wouldn't use something like mae or Marie too boring and bland

Not a fan of hyphenated first names, and Mary-Helen sounds like an old nun's name

I love Mary and Helen! Not crazy about the hyphen but I definitely think you should use Mary Helen. Im surprised all the comments are negative, Mary Helen is 1000% better than some of the crazy stuff people think its okay to name their poor kids now a days.

I prefer Mary-Ellen! I adore the combination! You don't have to hyphenate it though. You could use one name as her first name and one as her middle name and call her by her first and middle all the time.

In all honesty, I agree with LS. My immediate thought was that she could be a nun. Admittedly, though, I don't like hyphenated first names and anything you hyohenate with Mary is going to sound like a nun. Of all the possibilities out there, I actually don't hate Helen. It is a little outdated, but that makes it unexpected. As I say it out loud, though, another thing to consider is that it is probably going to get easily confused with Mary Ellen.

I really like Helen and Mary is okay. I would assume from a name like Mary Helen or Mary-Helen that the family is Catholic. The hyphen isn't necessary, imo.

Another thing to keep in mind is whether she'll go by both names she's older and if you're okay with her going by just the first one. I know two girls with double barrel names, one in her late teens and one in her middle teens. Both go mostly by the first of their double names. So your child may well end up using just Mary if you go with this name.

I love Mary Helen! I'm not a fan of hyphenated names, but I do love the name. I would be delighted to meet a young Mary Helen. "Outdated" names are making a comeback. I, for one, think Mary Helen sounds very distinguished. Amid all of the more modern names these days, Mary Helen is anything but boring!

I love the name Mary but not in love with Helen. And i think it's a tad long and cumbersome. However, if you love it use it! I think when spoken in casual conversation it may end up sounding like Mary-Ellen as it's a little less cumbersome to say.

P.S. i do not consider Mary a name exclusive to Catholics nor does it only conjure up thoughts of Catholics. My good friend in high school was Jewish and had the name Mary. And it was popular for many decades as the most popular girls name in the U.S. and Catholics were not in the majority. Just sayin'
